Reviews summary
Nestled in a quaint setting that captures the essence of Southern hospitality, this restaurant offers a mixed bag of experiences. While some patrons rave about the crispy fried chicken and delectable sides, others express disappointment over inconsistent quality and cleanliness issues. Ambiance reigns supreme, with many appreciating the charming outdoor seating and cozy atmosphere. Despite some glowing recommendations for dishes like tomato pie and macaroni and cheese, several diners report unsatisfactory service and instances of discriminatory treatment. For those seeking genuine Southern comfort food, it's advisable to approach with caution, as experiences seem to vary widely.

This is an awesome restaurant and location. The setting is very quaint, southern, and proper. It is essential posh or high end southern comfort food. The restaurant is in what looks a sizeable old home. Pet friendly with an aesthetically pleasing seating area that definitely fits the vibe/style of the restaurant. Food is amazing, plus the staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Quality food and service at a price you won't be mad at. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone in the area, tourists or locals!
Honestly I'm a bit disappointed. After reading the reviews I was very excited to try this restaurant but i was less than impressed. Our waitress was wearing a crop top spaghetti strap tank top with no bra and ripped jeans (fine for a bar/tavern or going out with friends, very inappropriate for a fancy restaurant).Next: NO Clean cups!!! We never got water with our meal bc they had no available glasses.3rd: our beer was not cold, and also had no mugs, beer was just in the cans....she told me they were using a bucket of ice to get some cold in the back....(that's fine for camping, but again paying 5-8$/beer i would expect it to be cold. This made our service slower as well; I asked for another beer when mine was almost empty and took almost the end of my meal to get my next one bc there were not any cold ones, she put it in the ice bucket to chill and was waiting for it to get cold enough...Now the food....the food was phenomenal, the food is the only reason for the 3 stars. Fried green tomatoes for appetizers and was on point delicious.I had the pulled pork with salad and Mac and cheese. Again 100% delicious food.My date had the hot chicken with salad and Mac n cheese. He was equally happy with his dish. The food was 100% the saving grace here. Delicious fresh food.I am out right appalled at the service and lack of dishes for a top-rated restaurant.
Right. Now I know why it is. My meal was really fabulous. I've got the pintos and rice with some kind of Coleslaw that...
My husband and I love this place. It has all the southern comforts you are looking for! From ambience, food and friendly service. Remember, it's a...
There have been several times where I walked out of this location because of how dirty the location is. I see the workers touching trash bags and dirty wipes with their gloves on. As I watch them they don?t put on a new glove to make your food. They just expect you to ignore the fact that they touch insanitary items before touching your burrito wrap. Also in the summer, please get some real air conditioning. It?s always hot and the workers sweating all over the food is gross! These people seem like they have no regard for their customers. High prices too. No thank you

I absolutely love everything about The Proper - from the local, fresh food to the excellent service. This charming little restaurant fills up quickly, so I recommend making a reservation. The food is outstanding and definitely a must-try while you're in Boone.
We stopped in after a Campus tour and they accommodated us without a reservation. They were so nice. We all had beverages while we waited for a table. They had a great selection of Alcohol Free drinks to enjoy. A wine list too. The food was amazing. Fried green tomatoes with peach sage drizzle, potato cakes with pimento cheese-Fabulous. We will be back next time we are in town.
Wow, I used to come here all the time in college from when it opened to 2013. The soul food at this restaurant is simply divine. The fried chicken is crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, with a perfect blend of spices that make it irresistible. The macaroni and cheese is creamy and decadent, with a gooey melted cheese that melts in your mouth. And let's not forget the collard greens, simmered to perfection with just the right amount of smoky flavor and tender texture. Each bite transports you to a place of comfort and nostalgia, and the flavors linger long after the meal is over. This is soul food at its finest. It’s amazing this place is still open and looking forward to revisiting during my next visit in the near future.
We sat in the first dining room, so it was a little cold. The food was amazing. It tasted like food style cooking and was very filling. I love their desserts as well

Stopped here looking for a good meal while passing through town. They were full up, but were gracious enough to squeeze us in. Food was incredible, and the staff was so friendly. They really made us feel like guests, instead of just customers. Whoeverdoes the baking there is proper talented... Try the key lime pie 10/10 would recommend.
Excellent southern cuisine!! Super-friendly and accommodating staff!! Ethan offered very helpful guidance and recommendations! My husband and I both ordered side salads for our starters, and they were fresh and the dressing was delicious. For ourentrées, my husband ordered the fried catfish, collard greens and the green beans. I ordered the fried chicken breast, mashedpotatoes, and collard greens. Every single morsel was absolutely delicious! All of the dishes were top notch, and the collardgreens alone are worth the visit! For dessert, we had Key-lime pie and raspberry crème brûlée. The pie was authentic? thecustard the perfect balance of tart/sweet and the crust was buttery-yum mines? and the crème brûlée was the best either of ushad ever tasted! Nothing was greasy or overly seasoned? you could taste the flavors of the food. So enjoyable! The chicken wascrunchy and moist? the catfish was crispy and clean-tasting! The prices are amazingly reasonable for the quality and value ofthe food. The ability to execute outstanding course components consistently is pretty rare! And, to add that the overallexperience delivered on all aspects is exceptional! What a gem!
Service was very good, it was mid evening on a Thursday, so not very busy. We ordered fried green tomatoes as an appetizer. We all ordered fried chicken with assorted sides. The chicken breast was ok. It was a little dry, but the batter it was in wascrunchy and tasteful. The rice and gravy was unremarkable. Mac and cheese, good but didn?t stand out. Collards were tender. Thegreen beans and potatoes were unremarkable. I?m from Louisiana/Texas, my wife, Southern Alabama. I understand southern comfortfood. For the price we paid for three to have a fried chicken breast, no choice offered, only breast) and unremarkable sides,I?m not certain I?d categorize this as ?southern comfort food?. Perhaps we?ll stop by again and try another dish.
A great spin on southern comfort food. The portion sizes are perfect?not too big to finish at the restaurant but you definitely won?t leave hungry. The hot-dipped chicken has great flavor and isn?t over-powering, but it can be complimented with a homemaderanch to tame the spice for those who are sensitive to spicy foods. The sides are excellent too; I?d recommend the green beanswith potatoes. The closed-in front porch provides a nice ambiance and the place offers nice craft beers and a better-than-mostwine selection by the glass.
