Reviews - Coes
Reviews summary
Hidden in tiny Bernard, this unpretentious bar-restaurant is a warm, family-friendly local favorite where owners and staff go the extra mile. Hearty, affordable sandwiches and steaks — notably the steak and brisket sandwiches and a standout ribeye — are made with fresh ingredients, sometimes from the owner's cattle. Cold beer pours and big mixed drinks accompany quick service, a lively laid-back atmosphere and genuine hospitality; the place is charmingly worn and could use some cosmetic TLC.

Great service and great folks all around... good family setting. Anytime I'm in town it's always a treat taking my mom for a fish sandwich and coke and catching up with the locals.... thank u coes keep up the good work View all feedback.
What Sean W dislikes about Coes:
Of the two bars in the small town of Bernard, this one is definitely the best. Although it may not be as clean as some other places and could use some tender loving care (paint, etc.), the staff was friendly and the food was really good. I highly recommend the steak sandwich - it's a definite winner. View all feedback.

Super great staff... super good food. Great menu. Good drinks. So hard to find. Large food prices... Str parking. Decide when you're close...
The food is cheap. Service is good. Do not expect locals to give you the time of day.
5 stars above the board. All roads do not lead to Coes, but it is so good that you find your way there. There we met after a golf trip to Peosta on a Sunday and all my mates where very impressed. No beer, but they had an impressive selection. One of the few more bars that Old Style.both has light and regular Krausened quality. A lady sneaked bar (3/4 full) and was able to take care of her, our drinks, our food orders and also cook the food. That was an impressive case of jugging. And the food.. wide variety of options and obviously that inflation has not hit this institution. I had a Patty Melt, an order of onion rings, an order of fried mushrooms, and 3 beers and a mixed drink... $29..almost criminal. And the mixed drink came in a pint glass.supersize me! Fine food? Don't be silly. But they have $19 steaks I'll try to go back.

I can not speak highly enough of Coe's Bar!! We were on a trial ride to get timings down for the Alex Salow Memorial Cruise coming up in 2 weeks. One of our stops which was the food stop we found out were permanently closing. Coe's were so accommodating on our last minute request to bring our ride to there establishment and provide food for us all! They saved the day and our upcoming ride!
Amazing! We went to Field of Dreams. It was after 8pm on 6/28 and no where to eat. Miranda at Trackside recommended going to Coe’s. Back country roads thought we were too trusting….. and did I mention we were from Utah. Best decision we made!! The place was great10/10. The owner takes care of you as soon as you walk in the door. I ordered the Ribeye Steak sandwich which was perfect. My husband had the Brisket sandwich again perfection and the homemade bbq sauce was bank. The people there were so welcoming it felt like you had known them a lifetime. So, if you are driving 80 in Iowa a detour to Bernard Iowa population 120 is worth the stop.
Just had meatball sub and Parmesan Garlic Fries. Absolutely delicious and very filling! Thank you!!!

I absolutely love a pleasant surprise, and that's exactly what I experienced at Coe's. Although it may seem like just a run-down bar with little to offer, I was pleasantly surprised by the delicious food prepared with fresh ingredients, including meat from the owner's cows. The fried food was surprisingly not greasy, and our waitress/bartender/sole employee was extremely friendly and helpful. We will definitely be returning to Coe's in the future.
