This wonderful restaurant, located in a historic old railroad station, closed its doors in the spring of 2018. The owners decided to retire, and to my knowledge, as of January 2023, no one has taken over the space. The building is privately owned and listed on the registry of historic places. It was known for its incredible cuisine, featuring fresh seafood and prime rib. Whenever we visited Bennington, we made it a point to dine there, and we were truly sad to see it come to an end.
We visited Bennington Station with a big group of eight people and were seated right away. The service was incredibly quick, and our server was friendly and attentive. Everything we ordered arrived just as we had requested. We started with a few appetizers, and I have to say that the breaded clams were my favorite, although the baked Brie was also delicious and worth trying. For my main course, I had the pasta with scallops, shrimp, and lobster. I can’t recall the exact name of the dish, but it was fantastic. And I must highlight their incredible salad bar – it's enormous with a wide variety of fresh vegetables and plenty of toppings. Plus, the bread was absolutely delicious! Overall, Bennington Station is a wonderful dining option in Bennington. It's not your typical small-town restaurant, offering great food and excellent service.
The Bennington Railroad Station, which began construction in 1897, is an impressive structure made of rough-finished blue marble, giving it a granite-like appearance. The marble, quarried in West Rutland, was hand-cut and transported to the site by locomotive. Originally, the station's entrance faced Depot Street, protected by a large porte cochere, and the main waiting room spanned the entire width of the building. Today, guests enter through a walkway that crosses over the railroad tracks, and the waiting room has been transformed into a lovely dining room and bar area. The restaurant retains much of the architectural charm of the old train station, featuring interesting archways, wooden decor, and vintage lampposts from the original waiting room. We found a quaint dining room adjacent to the main area, which was both light and airy—perfect for enjoying our lunch. The lunch menu offers a variety of appetizers, including crab cakes, shrimp cocktail, baked brie en croûte, and "Vermonchos," a local twist on nachos. There are also soups, salads, and sandwiches such as burgers, a turkey sandwich, grilled cheese, and a Croque-Monsieur—a delicious combination of grilled Vermont smoked ham, Gruyere cheese, topped with cheese sauce, more Gruyere, and then broiled. For my main lunch order, I kept it simple—if a little touristy—by selecting a cup of New England clam chowder followed by a lobster roll. The lobster roll featured tender Maine lobster chunks mixed with mayonnaise and fresh spring mix, served on a toasted split-top roll with homemade chips. This was my first lobster roll of the trip, and it definitely did not disappoint! A big thanks to my trusty Yelp app for leading me to this charming little restaurant in downtown Bennington, VT!
Lunch for 4 was very good. Lobster rolls were excellent, fish was good, service was right on the money. Atmosphere was good, climate comfortable. This has gone through many owners and this match is a good one. Open lunch and dinner, closed on Sunday and Monday. We will be back often.
This is the top restaurant in Bennington. It's conveniently located just a few minutes away from the Bennington battle monument and the silk road covered bridge. So it's a great place to replenish your stomach after feasting of the eyes. We ordered a kid's burger for my little one, steaks for my wife and older daughter, and scallop/shrimp pasta for myself. All was great, especially the hormone free steak. And the Brie cheese is also amazing. Salas bar comes with all adult entrees, so you can fill your empty stomach right away if you are really hungry. Please be aware that this is a very popular restaurant, especially during the foliage season. So it's strongly recommended you make a reservation or go there really early. I heard them turning away a few same-day reservations.
