MY MOM'S EXPERIENCE: Wednesday 3/20 I had an unfortunate incident at the POMEII candy store located in San Fernando, province of Buenos Aires, where I was discr... read more MY MOM'S EXPERIENCE: Wednesday 3/20 I had an unfortunate incident at the POMEII candy store located in San Fernando, province of Buenos Aires, where I was discriminated against by the manager of the establishment by denying entry with my guide dog. I am Maria Jose Busco and I was with my faithful companion, Kira, who provides me with visual assistance. However, when trying to enter the POMPEII bar, the manager prevented me from entering, ignoring the provisions of the National Guide Dog Law (law 26858) which allows these animals to enter anywhere, except operating rooms. Despite the instructions of the law, the manager of the POMPEII bar ignored it and decided to contact the police authorities. In a matter of minutes, two patrol cars arrived at the scene, which caused surprise and distress to my husband, brother and me. Upon the arrival of the police, the existence of the regulations that protect the presence of guide dogs in all public spaces was communicated again, thus ensuring that the authorities spoke with the person in charge of the premises and finally left. However, it is important to note that at no time did the POMPEII bar staff approach us to apologize or provide us with attention. Additionally, I want to highlight that my guide dog, Kira, was motionless during the entire incident, demonstrating her training to obey the instructions given. In this sense, the question arises as to whether at any point the manager of the POMPEII bar reflected on the impact he had on me by denying me access to my guide dog, who is my eyes and my daily support. This fact of discrimination shows the need to raise awareness in society about the rights of people with visual disabilities and the importance of respecting and allowing the entry of guide dogs in all establishments, in compliance with current legislation. It is essential that the authorities, as well as the employees and managers of the premises, are duly informed about the regulations and promote an inclusive attitude, generating welcoming and equal spaces for all people, regardless of their abilities. I hope that this incident serves to promote respect for the law and awareness about the importance of inclusion and support for visually impaired people and their guide dogs.
