The server seemed hesitant to answer and simply stated that it was what the boss wanted. It then became clear to me that the concept of "Freedom Fries" was not originally from George Bush. In fact, on March 11, 2003, Representatives Robert W. Ney and Walter B. Jones, Jr. made the decision to rename French fries to "freedom fries" in House of Representatives-run restaurants, as a response to France's lack of support for the war in Iraq. The owner of Cubbie's seems to have followed this trend without much thought, demonstrating an immature behavior. However, it is important to note that French fries actually originate from Belgium, not France, and are called so because of the way they are prepared.

When I asked the young lady working there, she seemed uncomfortable and simply said it was what the boss wanted. It turns out that the renaming of French fries to freedom fries was actually a decision made by representatives in 2003, not by George Bush as I had assumed. The owner of the restaurant seems to have blindly followed this trend without understanding the reasoning behind it. It's clear that they were trying to make a political statement against France for not supporting the war in Iraq. However, I believe this decision was foolish and immature. French fries are named as such because of the way they are cut, not because of any political affiliation. It's important to understand the history and origins of things before jumping on bandwagons.
