Stopped for lunch in Barjac. Found our normal restaurant was closed so we tried this one. What a great find! Sat in their funky little courtyard enjoying a cool breeze and had only some tapas and an appetizer for lunch. It was hot and did not want nothing too heavy. All were very good. You often hear comments of the rudeness of French waitstaff because unlike America, they do not act like your new BFF to get a bigger tip. Instead they are professional. The waiters here are happy, smiling, joking, but not in the obnoxious BFF way. Just FYI this is a typical French non-pretentious restaurant. Lunch takes a while because one chef actually prepares fresh hot good food, not a couple of minimum wage flunkies with a microwave. But that is a plus. Lots of time to enjoy the shade, the breeze, and good company. Good find. I will be back.

There’s lot’s of choice for dining for a small town in Barjac but recently there has been a flurry of openings on the charming cobblestoned alley leading up from the Tourist office into the historic centre and whilst the rest have outdoor seating on the lane (as does Patio 39) I was enticed by some cool mellow music to investigate their patio at the back. It’s a wonderful space, definitely shady enough to ward of the intense heat and sun of French summer for lunch and the mismatched antique chairs whilst still very french added a boho edge. This with the music and friendly laid back welcome led us to book a reservation for lunch. We had lots of questions on the menu (there’s an a la carte not a huge selection, which is normal for French restaurants but looked like it would cover most people’s preferences) or the formule which was starter and main, or main and dessert for 15 euros (only available at lunch) and certainly despite our imperfect french our questions were happily received and answered and all with a smile. The tables are well spaced (not sure what they were like pre COVID but def meets regulations now). We had a platter of charcuterie and vegetarian platter to share for starters and then all decided to go with the snapper for mains which was wonderful. It hadn’t said anything about the accompaniments but they matched and enhanced the snapper so well. I love bits and pieces so there was a pumpkin (I think) puree, a poached fruit, a roasted sweet potato and white potato wedge and courgette frittata as well as a side salad. It was def more fine dining than rustic french (in a good way) but the portions were definitely adequate. All in all a delightful lunch with friendly, smiling service
