Our experience at Jiya's in Calangute, Goa was disappointing. The restaurant is located in a crowded area and we encountered a language barrier with the waiter. He was initially unaware of what vegan meant and later assured us that everything in the restaurant was vegan, including the paneer. We ordered some supposedly mild curries, which turned out to be extremely spicy. Even my girlfriend, who is of Sri Lankan descent and used to eating spicy food, found it too hot to eat. The two young owners of the restaurant stood near us, watching us eat without blinking, which made us uncomfortable. We even felt the need to closely inspect our bill to ensure it was not counterfeit. The orange juice we ordered was mostly water. Overall, Jiya's is not the place for a pleasant dining experience. We love Indian food, but this was hands down the worst vegetarian restaurant we have visited in India. There are plenty of other great vegetarian options around Goa, so we recommend not wasting your time here.

Located behind a small tourist market, Jiyas is a diner-like restaurant that may not meet all expectations. However, in India, vegetarian restaurants are quite common and Jiyas offers a wide variety of traditional Indian meals, many of which contain dairy. The dining experience was satisfactory and prices were affordable, but overall it was not the best dining option we found in Goa.
