It was my first time visiting Berbena with my partner, who had previously had a good experience and was eager for me to try it as well. We ordered four starters and four main courses (half portions), but almost every dish (6/8) was completely lacking in flavor. My partner and I kept exchanging confused looks about it, because we couldn’t understand how every dish was so mid. Adding to the confusion, some dishes were served in chipped bowls. That’s neither visually appealing nor does it make you feel appreciated as a guest. The restaurant itself is a bit chaotic, very narrow seating and hectic service. Also: I was seated with my back to the wall, and condensation from the air conditioner on the ceiling kept dripping onto my neck. When I brought it up, a staff member impatiently tried to wipe it with a stick – only to splash the rest of the water across my shoulders and neck. She saw it. No apology offered. All in all, the experience fell far short of expectations. The food and the service simply didn’t live up to the praise we had read beforehand. They recommend half servings for smaller tables and it was great for us to try so many dishes. My favorites pictured here. The elderflower sorbet was out of this world. I ordered a second serving. I had an unbelievable meal here on my first night in Barcelona — maybe it was the jet lag, maybe it was the beautiful natural wine poured with intention and exc... read more I had an unbelievable meal here on my first night in Barcelona — maybe it was the jet lag, maybe it was the beautiful natural wine poured with intention and excitement by the mega-talented sommelier, maybe it was the warm, attentive, and highly skillful service, but mid-way through my meal, perched on my bar seat overlooking the open kitchen, I may have gotten a little bit choked up. I’m not one to write reviews, or gush, but I promised myself I would for this one. My server, Victor, was fantastic and on point with his recommendations, and it was very cool to see everyone working as a team and contributing to plating, service, etc. in the open kitchen. They happily hooked up half portions as I was dining solo, you cannot go wrong here. Put your life in their highly capable hands, if just for one seating, and prepare to be wowed.
