TOP Location, FLOP Service/Food&Beverage What a pity, such a wonderful place ruined by unprofessional and unpolite waiters.
This place is in the way out of ermita of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. We got there with the expectation of getting Spanish friendly service and all we got was a very upset guy at the Bar treating tourists as unwanted visitors. Food was pretty normal, no flavors, glasses and forks at the table were dirty. Our questions were not answered and instead they made us feel uncomfortable. They said tapas were 2euros and then charged us 3!! For no reason. Brought bread we did not ask for and also wanted to charge us for it. Rather wait and drive a little bit more and enjoy better service.
I ate here with my girlfriend and we were both very pleased with the experience. The view from the restaurant is amazing, the staff very friendly and the quality of the food very good. It is not cheap but you have to pay for quality. The shrimps, crab, anchovies, turbot and monkfish were very fresh and perfectly cooked, delicious.
We first fell in love with the marvellous coast line and San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. Going up there, climbing up the 233 steps is absolutely worth it . I always dreamed about getting married there and so did my actual husband, only that we got married in French Polynesia but one day we will go back there and renew our vows. The owners of Gaztelubegui are friendly, hard-workers, honest and authentically Basque. The food is great and the rooms have a rural cozy touch. Please, go to the nearby town of Bermeo and enjoy their early cocktail hour at noon!! You can ask for beer or wine and go from bar to bar, it's definitely an experience but eat as you drink or you can end uo quite tipsy before lunch. We love the Basque Country, its food, culture and mainly its people and we hope you will enjoy it and learn to love it too. Safe Travels!
