we have eaten somewhere on a Monday in august and then we have seen the café de l’europe. it is a typical brasserie with a cheap menu. we had a shaded table outside. in fact, all the meals were served outside as it was a hot sunny day. the service was friendly and eating was good brasserie eating. two of us had steak and one huh and it was delicious. they also had one of my favorite French desserts, île flottante. we... What Astrid Colin doesn't like about Cafe de L'europe:
Large establishment with probably the worst waiter we've ever encountered in a French restaurant. In England we would have been looking round for a "Candid Camera" moment but this was no joke. The wine was drinkable....just. The boeuf bourgignon on the other hand was quite...dreadful. A regional dish should be prepared with love and soul but this was two big chunks of fatty meat in sauce plonked in a dish with tinned... View all feedback.
Servers are very kind, but the service is very long. has two, a salad and a low rib=35 minutes. And what a disappointment: the meat piece is tiny, extra fine, dry, baked in a pan (we would obviously prefer cooking at the grill or at the plancha) and too cooked as requested" to the point". Frozen fries, soft and first price (when it is more economical to buy a fried appliance and make them home...)The worst is the goat salad: very expensive almost 10 euros, lots of salad, 4 slices of tomatoes, a slice of half-bread cut in two and two tiny slices of industrial goat. we expected a salad with at least one whole tomato, maybe an egg or dried cheese, nuts or on a sister sprocket and in any case a toasted fresh bread and a fresh goat crottin. especially at this price we did not take dessert and we will never come back here
Having been in Avallon since just after lunch by evening hungry and looking for a quick and handy fill up. Looks better from outside with pavement area but it was getting cooler and we headed inside. Quite basic local bar style with large pool table in corner and not cosy/quaint french feel with little English spoken. slightly feeling of silence as we entered but by going up to bar and ordering a couple of drinks ice broken.. Despite that managed to order steaks and starters which both were surprisingly tasty despite rather basic surroundings. Service was OK with waitress who managed to smile despite language gap and price cheap. Suited us and so was very good (as cheap and almost cheerful) but not if you wanted any frills- in which case you would be disappointed. Other more expensive places in town but for us less convenient and in some cases already closed for the night
Lunch Sunday at noon. waitress who don't understand our order. flat mediocre, mistake in the bill, cleanness of the terrace we don't talk about it. I don't advise anyone to stop there and I'm not going to go,
Dubious cleanliness. On the map, salads of all kinds! after 30 minutes, we are ordered without a smile the famous salads, huge leaves that hide for a 2 green beans, a half heart of artichoke, 2 or 3 asparagus nets ( certainly remains of bottom cans) 3 small slices of melon!!!
I often give a coffee break in this establishment during my downstream passages (summer and winter). I'm happy with that, but I haven't taken advantage of the catering service yet.
