What Anjali Schroeder doesn't like about Mary Mac's Tea Room:
I’m sorry it might be frowned upon to not give a good review of such an institution such as this, but I really can’t give a good one. It was just okay. We were there on a Wednesday at 5:00,so we were seated immediately. It was our first visit so we were served pot licker. It was the best part of the meal. My husband and I ordered the “famous” fried chicken. It would seem that our chicken was fried and then kept warm in the oven. The dark meat was good, but the white meat was truly awful. It was so dry that I drank tea as I chewed, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to swallow. Our daughter had the shrimp and grits. The grits were ok, but the shrimp was overcooked and rubbery. The wait staff stopped by our table often; but when she asked how we were doing, I told her and showed her that the chicken was very dry. Her words were “Ok. Sorry about that”. She then walked away. She walked past us at least 4 times; but we had to ask for our check. The collards were very good, the mac and cheese, broccoli mix (frozen-not fresh) and baked goods were sub-standard. The rolls were also really dry. We were given one small half pat of butter on our plate. The peach cobbler was ok, but it was made from canned peaches. Why wouldn’t you use fresh peaches in July; we are the peach state!

The server was excellent and couldn’t ask for better service. The food was like a cafeteria nothing to write home about. Now the tomato pie and rolls were great. Had string beans with my meal and about gagged on them. There was more string than bean and had to go to the bathroom so I wouldn’t make a spectacle of myself gagging in the dining room. The sweet tea was spot on. I found something positive. I know it’s a traditional place to go, but somethings just might need a makeover.
One of the best southern restaurants I’ve ever been to. Good food, friendly staff, and simple menu. Our server, Winta, was so accommodating and explained the menu well. Definitely recommend coming here!Kid-friendliness: Booster and high chair available. Good atmosphere for children. Plastic cups for kids, and meals specifically for kids.Parking: Plenty of free parking spots behind the restaurant. Parking specifically for the restaurant.
The restaurant was pretty good. The food could definitely use more seasoning, but I liked the chicken and dumplings. The okra was good, and I liked the cornbread and rolls. The fried green tomatoes weren't very good and neither were the green beans. The bartender was really nice.
