The staff could benefit from training on appropriate customer service; their smiles felt forced. While the prices are low, the quality of the food reflects that—lacking in flavor and overly greasy. My boyfriend ordered combo #4, and the bacon was oddly flat and lacked any crispness, suggesting it had been sitting out for a while. I took a bite to see what all the fuss was about, but the burger was completely devoid of flavor; it was also dry and difficult to swallow, so I ended up spitting it out. You're better off dining at Wendy's or McDonald's instead. The onion rings left a greasy residue at the bottom of the plate. Save your time and money.

Let's be real your never going to get anything that good here or good for you. I like the hot dogs with chili and pimento cheese, onion rings when you request them crispy, and a frosted orange. Everything else I can do without. This is more of a destination place when friends come back to Athens and need a Varsity fix for old nostalgia sake. We live here so we go a couple of times a year on our own. Expectations are low and they don't disappoint. I look forward to going before I eat, and then say this probably last time I will eat there as I leave the place. Recognize it for what it is, a classic and not a deliver of five star food.

You get what you pay for but wow, you're better off getting similar greasy food at another fast food place. The burger was trash, the fries were greasy and stale (how does that even happen), and the wait was too long. If you want food that will mess up your stomach, at least go somewhere where the taste will be worth it.

Having been to the one in Atlanta I thought yes The Varsity in Athens what ll ya have, what ll ya have . Popped through the drive through. All the set menu items were massive, no straight cheeseburger and fries !! Drive thru took for ever and there was only one person in front of me. I had ordered a cheese burger and onion rings. Out it came and the first thing I thought was I 've got the wrong order. It was a box that looked like it was holding 20 chicken pieces and fries. Opened the box and in there was my little wrapped cheese burger and about 6 onion rings sitting in the corner of the box. The onion rings looked like they were fried last week and had been sitting in the oil all that time, they were dark brown. I was very disappointed to be honest. Not how I remember the one in Atlanta. Taste wise the burger and surprisingly the onion rings tasted good. Due to my disappointment I am unlikely to go back if I am ever going through Athens again.

I get that the Varsity is a staple in Georgia and has garnered a passionate fan base since it first opened. In fact, it likely had that enthusiastic following right from 1928 when it was originally called the Yellow Jacket. It rebranded to the Varsity to better attract college students. The place has a charming retro vibe, and while the menu is straightforward, sometimes simplicity can still be a culinary delight. However, I have always found the Varsity to be just average, at best. Honestly, it's nothing extraordinary; it really doesn't stand out. People continue to flock to the Varsity, often driven by nostalgia, which I completely understand. Food can evoke memories, and we all cherish those moments that take us back to happier times when life felt a little brighter.
