We went to Smoke'N Ash last night for the first time. Fortunately, we ordered our food by 6:30p.m. The reason I said fortunately is because by 6:50p.m., they were out of chicken, ribs, and brisket. We ordered brisket tips with potato salad and rib tips with fries. The portions were so small we were still hungry after eating. My husband was not pleased with the barbeque rib tips being placed on the fries. The barbeque... View all feedback.
Food is good as well as their cake slices. The red velvet is my favorite it's super moist and flavorful.Food: 5/5
The food was good but come knowing what you want.... No recommendations or explanations just read or look at pictures (which I got off Yelp . Even after I said it was my first time and that I wanted this one picture she was like well that's a lot of different things (still no help or no name of the foods seemed irritated... which I ended up just ordering a bunch of different things anyways.... Just no help or customer service.
Absolutely delicious food. Tried the nachos and they were the best of both worlds. Other guests in my party ordered barbecue and enjoyed it immensely. It's hard to find both smoky, flavorful meat AND a good barbecue sauce but they nailed it! Everyone was friendly and the restaurant was clean and quiet. The owners were kind, helpful with selections, and very gracious. So glad we gave them a try on our visit to the area.
My BBQ Buddy read that this place was rated as one of the 50 best new restaurants by the New York Times. Either he misread or I have even more reason to not believe the Times. Not that it was bad; it wasn't. But it wasn't anything special; at least not the BBQ. We didn't try the Ethiopian Cuisine. There were three of us. We got there when they opened which was good because there was a bit of a crowd that came in shortly after us. Apparently there had been a story somewhere that caught some peoples' interest. One of us ordered the two meat plate, one the three meat plate and one the special of the day which was Rib Tips French Fries. The brisket was decent. Not a lot of smoke flavor but it was tender. The ribs were tasty. They were small but the meat fell off the bone. The sausage was very plain. I wish I hadn't gotten it and had gotten the two meat plate. It wasn't any better or different than a package or Eckrich or Jimmy Dean that you can get in the grocery store. The beans were good as was the okra. The green beans were very plain. No flavor at all. The rib tips were judged to be a little dry and the person that got them didn't appreciate them being served on top of the fries. He really wanted them separate. They had free refills on the drinks but no Diet Coke and the Coke Zero and one of the other choices were out. But they did have sweet tea and unsweet tea so that's what we went with. Like I said, it wasn't bad, just nothing I'd drive to the other side of town for again. There's a lot of competition in this area for BBQ and Smoke'N Ash isn't a contender for BBQ. If you want to try Ethiopian Cuisine, maybe they shine brighter there.
Four days ago, the NY Times published its 2022 Restaurant List: 50 Places in America We're Most Excited About Right Now. This is one of three Texas restaurants that made the list. Why? Because this place is a culinary wonder. It's the word's first Texas Ethiopian fusion restaurant. And, oh, what a great marriage these cuisines are! Discovering this place isn't about discovering the best Ethiopian restaurant in Texas, or about finding someone who can topple Franklin's or Snow's as best Texas BBQ. It's about celebrating the two cuisine together in a very authentic and revolutionary marriage. This place is what fusion is all about. Is it fancy? Absolutely not. It's as humble as it can possibly be. We ordered at the counter. They don't have a license to serve alcohol. I ordered iced tea which I poured (myself) into a styrofoam cup. No sound system/music. Unframed posters hang on the walls. Items were stored in the hallway next to the restrooms. It's not about the ambiance. But, oh, the food! We ordered the Tex Ethiopian Platter for 2. (It was enough for 3). Bring someone with you and order that. It's so good! I'm going to assume you've had traditional Ethiopian cuisine before. If not, try that, first. You wouldn't try a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup before ever trying peanut butter or chocolate. Go to the fanciest Ethiopian place you can find. Experience that. Enjoy it. Then come here! Okay... now that you've done that, this dish is a platter of injera (fermented, spongy, pancake like bread with a sourdough like tanginess to it) covered with smokehouse brisket and ribs (seasoned with great awaze through which the berbere seasoning really shines) along with a doro wot (Ethiopia's national dish) made with smoked chicken and a Tibs dish of yummy rib tips. Accenting the platter are beefy collard greens, spiced red lentils, barbecue sauce (delicious but not needed) and Texas toast. I can't wait to try this again! It's an authentic place. The food is prepared with passion. And it's not contrived. The culinary marriage started with a literal marriage between a native Texan and an Ethiopian immigrant. This food is an expression of the natural outpouring of love between them. And let me tell you they are onto something!
