What Bertram Donnelly dislikes about Chardon:
Quite disappointed, the concept of the unique menu is nice but very expensive for what it proposes: Chiche peas cream in entry (delicious cetes, lamb ribs (I didn't find the meat, but fat with pickles in accompaniment and dessert semolina cake (not very refined). Basic raw materials, no meat, and a very average dessert for 35 euros.. with children who have just peaked it makes it expensive to have lunch with family.... View all feedback.
Before the points of criticism, I would like to begin with two positive aspects: 1. dishes are well cooked and do not lack originality. the chef "in residence", apparently an Australian, has been able to combine ingredients of French cuisine through asie. 2. This restaurant serves again after 10:00.But, all positive points stop there. Upon arrival, a map or menu is written in all small letters is placed on the table. the waitress gave us a long speech on the concept of the restaurant and she explained to us why it is wonderful (chefs in residence..ephemers, exceptional wines, etc.). she offered us the tasting menu for 40 eur or otherwise we had to choose a minimum of 2 dishes per person (movement 15 eur/plat) ; more, we were told that a sommelier would accompany us all at the long meal. All right, all of this looked very promising until the arrival of the dishes that are served in vulgar dishes of the ikea style. and looking at the servings, we quickly understood why we had to order minium 2 dishes, because they arrive in the size of the tapas (which makes the price/plat quite high). But, well, we thought that this could be part of the minimalist concept. In addition, the sommelier's accompaniment proved to be expensive. Not only did the sommelier have to be relaunched on several occasions to serve us the rest of the wines, but at the time of the addition we found ourselves with glasses charged between 8.50 and 11 eur/verre!!!! at the end, the addition including 6 dishes (taille tapas) to two, plus 4 glasses/person is mounted to 158 eur. an amount that is not justified by the frame, nor by the concept and even less by the service.Unless you want to pay for tapas at the golden price, there is currently a growing number of good restaurants in Arles that offer a high price ratio much higher than that of this self-proclaimed bistromic restaurant. So you pass your way, you'll find better elsewhere.
The products are of very good quality but everything is really too expensive especially in view of the quantity (you must have at least 2 plates per person ... or about 40€ and if you have little appetite ) it is damage because the dishes are really original.
An original cuisine full of flavors but really very cherished in view of the content a choice of 6 (small dishes) of 8 to 17 e is to be said to share, we recommend you from the start to take 4/5 by people, so given the little variety and quantity there is not much sharing, we ask for a bottle of rosé but we are told that it is to wait for the sommelier who arrives from office with a bottle of wine and served by a very happy sommelier who makes tons of it. I want to put this rate in a meal but not in these conditions, tables serrated against each other, in the plate of the products a little more noble, and plates a little bit more garnished.Break, we ate very well but we had the feeling of getting a little scam.
Unfortunately a bad note, the restaurant didn’t register my booking and i was left at 9.30 without restaurant in Arles.
Surprised at some of the reviews here because we had an amazing time at Chardon. The space is very small and cute and our waitress was very attentive. We did one vegetarian and one regular tasting and found both to be worth it and we were full. We also added the cheese plate which I highly recommend and the wine pairings. Coming from St, Tropez the price was reasonable for us but yes it is pricier than some other places in Arles, due to the aesthetic of the food. The only odd food to us was the sweet onion as dessert, but maybe we are not used to this as Americans.
