I love discovering new flavors, and I did just that at Beteseb. My husband and I split the veggie plate with doro wot (spicy chicken) and awaze tibs (beef). Be sure to get extra injera! It was all absolutely delicious, and unlike anything we'd had before. We ate plenty at the restaurant, and still had enough leftovers for us both to get another serving the next day. Everyone was very patient and helped us figure out... View all feedback.
My friend and I each got the veggie combo and it came to us on a giant shared plate. Some of the lentils were a bit on the harder side so I'm not as used to but everything had great flavor. The owner threw in an order of the shiro for free for us too! And that was honestly the best tasting, so creamy and delicious. I also got an Ethiopian tea and it had a nice kick. If you like strong ginger or spicy tea, gotta try it!
Had Ethiopian food for the first time with a friend and we both just absolutely loved it!!! Apart from having good food the staff was so attentive to us. We had who I presume to be the owner check in on us every few minutes to make sure we were doing good .Will be coming here again with more friends for sure.
VEGAN REVIEW! Came here for a last dinner with my roommates. I had the veggie platter while my roomies had other dishes. I will say that the service is TOP NOTCH. It's definitely one of those gemstone restaurants where you can tell so much labor and love goes into the food and service. The cashier educated us on the menu and food etiquette. I believe it's a family-owned restaurant and the family always checks in on you and makes nice convo! Definitely one of those restaurants where you befriend all the workers. Hopefully I can come back here again when I visit California!
Pros: Great kitfo, awaze and mitmita. Fresh and delicious, just as every solid Ethiopian place I 've been to all over the DC Area, and random places throughout the US including New York, Arizona, Nevada, Florida, and in LA. Pretty much all the Ethopian places don 't screw up my go to 's: kitfo and tibs. They 're all delicious. And the hospitality here was great, too. Deal breaker: They charged me extra for awaze and mitmita, at $3 each. I 've never been charged for these condiments, anywhere. I 've been eating Ethiopian food for 18 years now. I took a picture of the receipt and texted it to my Habesha friend in DC and she said Lol that 's bizarre, don 't return. I thought the same. I get that awaze and mitmita carry a cost. It 's not cheap like mayo and ketchup. But it would feel better if they just built that into the cost of the entree. It 's like going on Spirit Airlines and feeling like a schmuck because they 're charging you for water.
Second time of trying Ethiopian food. Friends recommendation. 1st time was in LA and it was horrible but this is not a far drive so it would interesting to check this out. Parking is extremely limited and it's right next to a barber shop. Inside decor is a restaurant but it's first come first serve. You order like a fast food restaurant and you pay afterwards. That's odd. Watch out for dine N' dash customers. Cashier explains the bread is suppose to be sour and you eat it your entree with your hands. Because the bread is too big and you don't have a lot of sauce or variety to cover it that sour taste, your options is either fried fish or salad. Got the fried rich. Takes about 30 minutues. Was it worth it? No. You are given a whole fish that's heavily season and that's it. No rice...nothing. How about the Ethiopian food? Well...it's meant suppose to be healthy so you are not going to be full from this. If you are heavy eater, then I don't recommend this place. Nothing wrong with this place or the food but you don't have a lot of options if you can't handle that sour bread. First and last time going here.
