Today was a real disappointed since the last time I ate here. I waited about 15 minutes before I was able to place my food order of a pork bitoque and about 45 minutes later when my food finally arrived they served me beef. They then took my plate back to the kitchen and did the pork. In the mean time the rest of the food was placed in an oven and when it was returned to me, my fresh fries were now soggy. Needless to say I was not impressed. Also to be noted is that others that came in the restaurant after us were served before us and some even finished eating before we got our food. The food we did finally get to eat was good but the service was a deal breaker for us. No longer on my return to eat list!!!
Good food. Kind staff. Fair price. For the dish in the picture (fried fish wish chips, rice and salad) it was Recommend
My husband and I were looking for a place to have a late lunch. Unfortunately, we learn the hard lesson that most restaurants are closed in the early afternoon for siesta time. Our hotel receptionist helped us find this place, Snack Bar Gafa, as we...wanted to try some food typical to the area. Our taxi dropped us to the snack bar which turned out to be a small eatery, unpretentious to look at and empty of customers. I think we surprised the female staff who were busily cleaning the tables and counter tops, and clearly not expecting customers at that time. Lol. One of them quickly came across and seated us at a table. She helped us choose our meals after we overcame challenges of communicating in our respective languages by using a language app on our phones. My husband had the Bacalau which is the fresh cod fish for which Portugal is renown. I had a chicken dish called Frango na Pucara which the waitress explained was created by the monks who once lived in a monastery in the town. Both meals were delicious and substantial. The apple juice that accompanied our meals was absolutely delicious as well, obviously pure juice without added sugar or flavoring. We were very happy with the meals. This is not a fine dining restaurant, but if you would like to try authentic food as eaten by the local folk then this is a place to try. The restaurant staff was helpful and friendly and we wonder if this is typical of the people of Alboca as our taxi driver was also friendly and helpful. He took us to the restaurant and came back for us, and on the way back to the hotel he detoured to show us the old town with the monastery that the waitress told us about, where the Frango na Pucara was created.
