Wide choice of locally prepared/cooked first class food. Very friendly staff. Seated outside next to canal de midi under umbrellers. At weekends usually live performers entertain. Restaurant can be difficult to find but well worth a visit. View all feedback.
What Tressa Hodkiewicz doesn't like about La Guinguette:
Visited August 2016, heightof tourist season. On first visit, kir royale was €2.60. This was the most expensive we had encountered on that holiday but we thought worth it for the ambience- and on a popular stretch of the canal du midi. Second visit, price now €3.60. For same drink, same time, same table. No explanation given but receipt was whisked away fast and no menu to hand to check price.....how strange. So, gre... View all feedback.
Cycled from marseillan purposely to la ginguette (we had always wanted to go but were out of season),had a fabulous lunch, chilled rose, dessert, watched the world slip by on the idyllic canal du midi before the hot dusty ride back. Fabulous afternoon spent
Linda and I stumbled across La Guingette three years ago, walking up the bank of the Herault north of Agde until we came to the point where the river meets the lower part of the Canal du Midi. There above the canal, with the river on one side and the canal lock on the other, as though it were on an island of its own, was an isolated restaurant which turned out to serve good food and wine at modest prices, and play French music from the sixties as well, presided over by a identifiable relic from 1968 with a quiet sense of humour. So in August 2016 we led our friends Linden and Helen there, fearing that it would let me down: it wouldn't be there, or it would have changed. My fears were groundless. The house wine was strong and inexpensive, my baked camembert an unexpected treat, my fruit salad sweet and fresh and delicious, my partner's chicken normande covered in a wonderful sauce, the escargots fresher than I have ever had escargots before and served with a fine garlic mayonnaise. The bill for four was 85 euros, which was remarkable value. I shall be back whenever I am in the region.
This really is a little gem of a restaurant. It is located on the side of the river just outside Agde. The atmosphere is hippy chic. Live music at the weekend and guests can get up and dance. The food is good although not outstanding but you do get 3 courses for 15,50 euro and the wine is very reasonable. Highly recommended if you like laid back style.
Fantastic restaurant by the side of the Canal de Midi. Sunday lunch time is magical with live music and dancing. Very reasonably priced . Well recommended.
We lunch here almost every time we visit Agde. It's a lovely walk along the river to where it meets the Canal du Midi so the views from the restaurant are beautiful and tranquil. The restaurant is exactly as another reviewer has described "Boho quirky delight". Decor and music is of a 1920s theme, all is quite basic but the food is good quality. They don't take cards so bring enough cash. The cider is great and it's possible just to pop along for an afternoon glass of something refreshing: alcoholic or not. One or our party recommends the Sangria very highly. 6 oysters for 9 Euros is a good deal and they offer lots of steaks. Not a huge amount of choice for vegetarians and vegans are completely stuck unless they're happy to just have crudites or a green salad. There is also a general expectation one will converse in French - so it's a good opportunity to improve your language skills!
