I really enjoy the chicken crisp bone and gizzard at this restaurant. The lamb skewer is delicious as well. Unfortunately, they have changed their weekend schedule to start at midnight. I also recommend trying the pork bones. View all feedback.

The service is average and the prices are fair. The BBQ is authentic and reminiscent of traditional Chinese BBQ.
It's interesting that this restaurant is located in the same plaza as Hog Tails BBQ, even though it serves Northern Chinese BBQ.

Located on the northwest fringe of Waterloo in an area boasting a high Asian population, Funny BBQ is a hidden gem for those seeking a cross-cultural dining experience that is decidedly different from what you get at the westernized Asian restaurants like Mandarin and King's Buffet, or even Exclamation restaurant in downtown Kitchener. From the moment you approach the front door to when you actually step inside, you will feel like you've been transported to another country, especially in the evening when the place is frequented almost exclusively by Asian customers. Chinese writing is everywhere, the decor is Chinese, and there are often even Chinese language programs playing on the overhead television screen.The menus, although predominantly in Chinese, do thankfully have English translations for most items. A few of the translations are rather entertaining, but that is something I have always loved about ethnic restaurants like this :)The restaurant features quite a range of items on its menu, so you may be hard-pressed to decide on what to order. It helps if you simply decide that this is only your first of several times here and you can order some of the other dishes that appeal to you next time :) They have a number of the usual dishes you'd expect to see on a Chinese restaurant menu, but also some that are not familiar to the western palate like pigs ears, pig intestines, and squid tentacles. If you are brave enough to try one or more of these, please let us know what you think!For those who like some heat with their meals, Funny BBQ features two levels of spiciness which are indicated by either one chili pepper or two chili peppers beside the appropriate menu items. My wife and I decided on one chili pepper meals. My wife had the kung pao chicken and I had the fried pork with spicy sauce, both with white rice sides. Both meals were delicious and had just the right amount of heat. My dish was interesting in that this is the first time I'd seen pork served in this way, with several dozen pieces of pork presented in almost a thin french-fry style, something which made for good chopstick practice!Unfortunately, the restaurant does not serve alcoholic beverages. I would have loved one of the beers featured on the menu, but they don't actually have any. I wonder if it's because the Hog Tails restaurant a few doors down in the same plaza has an exclusive license? Or maybe they're still awaiting their license...Prices are reasonable for the food you get. With only green tea to drink and two mains with rice sides, our bill came to just under $25. Paying cash will get you a 5% discount, and paying by credit card will add 50 cents to your bill.The restaurant has only been open for a few months but seems to be doing a good eat-in and takeout business.So if you're looking for some good food in a different dining atmosphere, I'd highly recommend Funny BBQ. We plan to be back. Maybe we'll see you there!
