In Middletown, this stylish steakhouse-pub hybrid shines for food and drinks — standout steaks, creative seafood, exceptional burgers and craft cocktails — with thoughtful desserts and generous portions. Yet hospitality wavers: slow service, miscommunication, sold-out specials and frustrating waits on busy nights detract from the experience. The modern decor and lively bar are inviting, though lighting, seating and occasional noise clash with the intended vibe. With steadier management and smoother kitchen-front coordination, it's poised to become the neighborhood destination it aims to be.
Without a doubt, some of the best burgers we've ever tasted! We tried the Heart a Quack and the Goat Herder, and they were fantastic. We also indulged in their amazing cheese curds drizzled with truffle honey. The portions were generous, the atmosphere was inviting, and the service was excellent. I highly recommend this place! Just a heads up: we ordered our burgers from the pub menu, which you can enjoy in either the bar/pub area or the more formal dining room. However, happy hour pricing is only offered in the pub section. Just thought I'd mention that!
We started with popcorn chicken, calamari, and meatballs, all of which were outstanding. Although we were disappointed to find that they were out of cheese curds, it did not detract from our overall enjoyment—all the dishes were delicious. For our main courses, we ordered steaks: a NY strip, petite filet mignon, and a couple of other entrees. The meats were cooked to perfection and packed with flavor. Initially, my dining companions deemed the mashed potatoes as 'boring,' but once they tried them, they changed their minds. The garlicky green beans were also a highlight. For dessert, we indulged in a rich chocolate pot-de-crème that was both sweet and delectable. We also tried a brown butter bourbon ice cream, which was a unique treat we had never experienced before—it was fantastic. Thank you to the team for your assistance and for seamlessly implementing the necessary safety protocols. I also appreciate the ease of using resy.com for reservations. We’ve typically used OpenTable, but our experience with Resy was just as smooth. Thank you!
We had a lovely evening at Herd. Our meal was quite delightful, featuring fried oysters, house-made pork belly, flat iron steak, a soft-shell crab special, and poached pear for dessert. Each dish was meticulously prepared; the seafood was fresh and cooked to perfection, while the steak was wonderfully medium rare. The flavors were enjoyable, though they lacked perfect balance. The soft-shell crab was a highlight, showcasing true creativity and skill. The poached pear was well-executed and not overly sweet, although it was served cold. The decor was stylish and modern, in line with the owner's vision. However, the location itself wasn’t particularly special, and the Christmas lights in the window felt a bit unnecessary. The drinks were expertly crafted, and our server provided outstanding service overall. We will certainly return, as this restaurant seems to be on the right track.
We had a group of four, and two of us arrived before my girlfriend and I did. They informed us that the main dining room was fully booked, but we were able to get a nice table in the pub area. It was no issue at all—very comfortable bar stools and a pleasant atmosphere. The food was decent as well. I ordered the polenta appetizer and the fettuccine with mushrooms as my main course. Both dishes were good, but a bit heavy on the truffle oil for my taste. I also tried the buffalo cauliflower; it was okay, though it would have been better with a bit more crispiness. The service was a bit slow, but it didn’t really bother me. The other members of our group had dined there twice before and loved it, mentioning that it seemed like an off night for the service. Overall, it was a nice meal, and I would definitely go back to give it another shot!
We were here about 2 months after they opened and we definitely loved the food and were not impressed with the service. decided we would give it another chance as we were really excited to have a steak house in Middletown. Over a year later the same result food was very good, wine was good but the service absolutely sucked, long wait times, ran out of all specials. Very sad to see but I think they need some new management with restaurant experience. I hope they do what is needed to get the help they need and make this a great place. :0(
