Manchuria is a cocktail bar. It's one of Melbourne's "secret" bars: it's virtually invisible from the street and you learn about its existence by word of mouth. In my case I received an invitation to a function at Manchuria and set out on a wet Thursday night to find it. First find Waratah Place: it leads off Little Bourke Street close to the intersection with Russell Street. Walk north until you spot a high-set red sign. There's a doorway in a brick façade, a raised roller shutter, and an unattractive but broad flight of stairs leading up to the first floor. Pass through the double doors and you're in a bar that resembles the ones you see in old movies. Supposedly this was how drinking dens were in the decadent days of old-time Manchuria. Who knows if they really were like this? Just enjoy all the clichés: red velvet, lounges and armchairs, curtains and beads and screens, lamps, woodwork, alcoves and intimate corners. There's a fabulous cocktail menu, spirits, beers and wines by the glass. Nibbles are "Asian tapas"/charcuterie, for instance spring rolls and calamari. Our function went well, and so far as I could tell from my limited contact with the wait staff they were helpful.
