Feedback
The restaurant located in the Lord Nelson Hotel offers a lovely heritage decor and good lighting. While some visitors enjoyed their hot or cold drinks, others were disappointed with the food quality and service. The breakfast buffet received mixed reviews, with some finding it subpar for the price. However, those who had the Arms breakfast and Belgian waffles were pleased. The outdoor patio overlooking the Public Gardens was a highlight, with good service and typical pub-style food. Despite the mixed feedback, the ambiance and dining experience, along with attentive service, were praised by some customers.
I'd never been to the old Victory Arms, so I made an effort to come by RCR's re-branded pub known now simply as The Arms.
I used to enjoy coming here until they changed their menu to be more traditional British. I'm not sure if they succeeded, but they aren't great for anyone who likes seafood or is a vegetarian. There is basically nothing on the menu now that doesn't include some kind of animal, such as duck or mutton. Or fried in fat from duck. Interesting. If you like traditional English food, you may like it a lot. The service was also slow, and not professional in my opinion. Maybe I'm a traditionalist in this part, but I believe everyone at your dinner party table should be served their food at the same time. Especially if there are just three of you. I've worked in restaurants, this isn't hard to do. I also watched the table across the room be served at completely different times too, and they were also just a small party of 3. I think everyone enjoyed their food when it arrived though. One friend had the Eggs Benedict, one the lobster BLT sandwich, and I had a veggie omelet (great).
Stayed here for two times at breakfast. Good menu, wide selection of sweet/savoury food and breakfast buffet on weekends. Excellent food quality (e.g. fluffy pancakes, flaky pastry, fresh fruit, omelettes made on request with fresh ingredients...). Prices a little higher than normal but well worth it for a fancy start of the day. Service might be a little slow if the place is busy.
The Arms was one of the last places we visited for brunch during our trip to Halifax, and it didn’t disappoint. Located right inside The Lord Nelson Hotel (where we stayed , the ambience strikes a nice balance between English elegance and a cozy pub. The Seafood Chowder was rich yet light, letting the freshness of the seafood really shine. I had the English Style Fish and Chips, and it was delicious! The fries were soft inside with a crispy crunch on the outside, while the cod was nicely battered and fried—crispy but not heavy at all. Everything was fresh, well balanced, and seasoned just right. Our server, Ethan (if I remember correctly! , was calm, professional, and friendly. They were quick and attentive when taking our orders, which made the entire experience even more enjoyable. If you’re looking for a brunch spot with great food and warm service in Halifax, The Arms is definitely worth a visit : I’m hoping to grab dinner here next time we visit! We ate breakfast at the Arms while staying at the Lord Nelson hotel. The breakfast might have been my favourite meal of the trip. At the end of the day we enjoyed drinks at the bar. My only gripe was the absence of substantial ice cubes in my Old Fashioned, using regular ice instead, which melted quickly and watered it down a little.
