What Althea Ledner dislikes about Zéfiro:
Solid presentation but quality and taste of food seriously lacking. I ordered crab tacos which were drowned in this chile sauce (might as well be enchiladas) and tasted like chicken! Crab should always taste like crab :(My friend ordered a fish dish which smelled of sea and was seriously over cooked. Our corn fungus soup was solid but it was Luke warm. Sigh! View all feedback.
A different experience. As I understand it, a restaurant is within a college or university where the students under the guidance of a master chef do the cooking. Food was good as well as service. Some genuine plates. The restaurant is in the center of Mexico city. A bit of traffic to get in and out. But once inside, the restaurant and area has a colonial feel to it. Relaxed feeling. Worth a visit. It also has a nice terrace. Price reasonable.
It’s an elegant place and service is great. They take the time to explain each dish and the history of the place. The plating is superb.
Zefiro is an exceptional restaurant in Mexico City because it is home to one of the best schools of gastronomy, at the Universidad del Claustro de Sor Juana. It is located one block away from the old convent of the St Jerome nuns, where in New Spain times the famous Sor Juana spent her life writing poetry, theater and cooking books!!! The restaurant offers a unique menu of traditional Mexican dishes prepared and presented in absolutely modern ways, The cocktail list is also very creative. The main dining room is a fusion of modern and colonial architecture, quite nice, with very pleasant baroque music from the colonial epoch in the background . There is also a terrace outside, in a large quiet patio where service is also offered. The clientele is diverse, all appreciative of gourmet food. I have been there twice, with family and with work colleagues, and find the place quite recomendable. I have tasted the tamal de chaya, the chicharron soup, the pork in chichilo mole, the fish tacos, the crab tacos, the pork in manchamanteles sauce, and very elaborated desserts. Students of the gastronomy school function as waiters and provide ample explanations, if required, about the ingredients and cooking techniques used in each dish. The restaurant is a bit hidden becuase of the layout of narrow old streets in the part of the old capital of New Spain, but the easiest way to get there is to go to the corner of Izasaga Avenue and Isabel la Catolica Street, walk one block north along Isabel la Catolica and then turn left at the small street, where you will finf Zefiro just 50 meters ahead on your right,
Simply one of the best dining experiences in cdmx. exquisite postres and cocktails. it is a profound pleasure and education for the palette. Service was perfection itself. if you miss this one while in cdmx, it will be a significant loss for your senses.
Everytime I am in Mexico City, I visit Zefiro. The food is always exciting but never pretentious. Staffed by students, the restaurant makes you feel like you are being helpful while at the same time enjoying a fine meal in a semi casual atmosphere.
