The restaurant definitely has an authentic vibe. The food and drinks are incredibly unique. While I wouldn't exactly describe the flavors as tasteful, the innovative cooking techniques offer a one-of-a-kind experience. It's definitely worth trying at least once! The distinctive chicken dish also adds to its charm. View all feedback.
What Liam HJ dislikes about Shokunin:
This was disappointing, especially since I’ve dined at Shokunin more than a dozen times and have always enjoyed it. The music is fantastic, and I truly appreciate Darren's dedication to sourcing top-quality ingredients, from Hainan chickens for the yakitori to binchotan charcoal from Kyushu, as well as Oceanwise seafood. On this visit, the nori sourced four times a year from Japan was a standout.

My server, Adam, was exceptionally helpful and attentive, and the entire staff exuded professionalism while maintaining a fresh and trendy vibe. I loved the energy they brought to the space. The ambiance was also fantastic. It’s cozy, but that’s typical of Japanese izakayas. The decor was perfect, creating a dynamic atmosphere for enjoying the meal. If you haven't been yet, I highly recommend checking it out soon! I can't wait to return for that crispy rice ball with a fried egg and some ramen!
My wife and I had some R&R time in Jasper, Banff and Calgary to celebrate our wedding anniversary. ? While we loved all of the amazing outdoor experiences, one of the highlights of our trip was our dinner at Shokunin restaurant. Ever since we watched chef Darren MacLean on the Netflix show The Final Table , we wanted to come try his flagship restaurant. The verdict on the food? Amazing!!! ? What we tried: Shokunin Sichuan Chicken with steam rice, Tori Ramen, Chicken Thigh Yakitori, Beef Tongue Kushiyaki, and Gindara Sablefish Sushi
I would say for the price point, most food are on the saltier side. Great with alcohol pairing, which is what this joint is about. But not when you don’t drink and just want to have some skewers.Seating is very crowded, I got kicked constantly by the server walking past by without any sorry offered. Don’t feel so great but he doesn’t seem to notice that he’s kicked my chair multiple times. Or he doesn’t care, I wouldn’t know.Would I come again? Maybe? if I’m drinking next time with a few friends…
We had the Kushiyaki Omakase dinner (4 pp max), everything was great! The seats are on the counter by the grill, so you see the chefs cooking, which is fun and entertaining Price per person: $100+ Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
We did the yakatori omakase and it did not disappoint. The scallop was the best I’ve ever had and coming from someone who grew up and still lives on the shore in the northeast of America I think that says a lot. The bluefin tuna hand roll was also exceptional. Our server and the head chef did an excellent job of explaining everything to us and keeping us engaged. Also by far the best quality sake I’ve ever had. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $100+ Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
