Located in the heart of Downe Village, a cozy 16th-century traditional country pub, recently awarded Pub of the Year by CAMRA and featured in the Good Beer Guide for 5 years. The public bar, also known as the Darwin Bar due to Charles Darwin's frequent visits, boasts two roaring log fires during winter, along with leather chesterfields, a piano, and a darts board. In addition to this, there are three charming restaurants and a cozy snug bar for those seeking a more intimate setting. During the summer months, guests can enjoy the large walled patio garden, offering a relaxing space with views of the adjacent 13th-century church. The menu features a variety of bar snacks, full meals, and daily specials crafted from locally sourced produce, available daily from Noon until 9pm (5pm on Sundays). Homemade soups and pies are the specialties here, with up to 8 different soups and 6 cask ales to choose from, including locally sourced options.
