I live in Basel and when we moved here, I was overall disappointed by the quality and expense of the restaurants (compared to the USA). There are a few however that stand out, and Roter Baren is one. Excellent flavors, surprising and delicious. I highly recommend it. Note that it's in a funny location safe, by behind a grocery store with the occasional prostitute nearby.
