We cycled in to La Maxe, pas... read more La Maxe is a small neat town near Metz. We had been cycling along the Mosel for many days. This day was cold, windy, and a bit wet. We cycled in to La Maxe, past plump cows grazing, and found a charming town, with sufficient building happening to indicate it is prospering. La Caleche was open and we came in for a beer and a coffee. There were many locals enjoying what looked like a delicious lunch, and very affordable. Some workers came in for coffee in their high vis vests, and some old folk with their zimmer frames. It was a charming local pub. The service was warm and welcoming, and the coffee very good. It did still have the last vestiges of the smell of smokers, but that is almost gone. f I found myself doing that cycle again, I would very happily make the diversion to La Maxe to enjoy that warm friendly service again.
