Nestled in a picturesque location, the restaurant has garnered mixed reviews from recent visitors. Guests noted issues with overwhelmed service, limited vegan options, and meals that didn't meet expectations, including cold dishes and disappointing flavors. Conversely, some diners enjoyed flavorful meals and praised the attentive, friendly staff, highlighting a cozy atmosphere and reasonable pricing. Positive experiences included delicious home-cooked meals and comfortable seating areas. Overall, while some customers left dissatisfied, others found charm and value in a rustic feel, making it a mixed bag of dining experiences that may warrant a visit, but with tempered expectations.
We went on a busy Saturday night and they seemed to be struggling. Much more limited selection of vegan options than portrayed on the website and other reviews. Ordered a number of sides as didn’t fancy the one vegan main. Small portions, slightly cold and underwhelming. I know covid is impacting all restaurants but this wasn’t anything like we were expecting from the reviews.
Based on some good reviews we went here for my wife's birthday. My wife chose a vegan filo pastry parcel and I chose a vegan falafel burger with hummus. The filo pastry was so tough my wife struggled to cut it open; the interior was excessively sweet and not worth the effort. The vegan falafel was tasteless and stodgy, so was the bun. Even the chips (the thin french fries variety) were like cardboard. We both left most of our meals and abandoned any idea of desert. The bar staff did not seem surprised we were unhappy and we were obviously not the first to say the burger was terrible. For comparison we went into the nearby Rose Cottage cafe for coffee and cake the food looked lovely and was *much* better value. Updated from previous review on 2019 02 18
This is an amazing country pub/hotel with welcoming staff, cozy fires, and a bar specifically for dogs! They offer a vegan option for every course and three choices for main dishes. I tried the chicken-less burger and salted caramel cheesecake, both of which were delicious. I highly recommend this place, but keep in mind that it can get busy on Mondays and Tuesdays, so booking ahead for the weekend is advisable.
Welcomed by a complimentary, reserved parking space directly opposite the hotel and exceptional staff who looked after us from the first minute! Home made food was delicious, service was great and a pleasant, quiet seating area at the rear of the hotel/pub. All reasonably priced. The room was spotless, well presented and fitting with the history of the location. Quiet and very comfortable for a good night's sleep. Completely furry friend friendly and an excellent place to stay for an array of local attractions, walks and traditional browsing shops. We really enjoyed our stay and look forward to visiting again. Dog friendly. Staff are lovely. Nice cosy country pub. We had the peakys ploughman's for 2. They had run out of pork pies and added extra meat to compensate. Ham was thick and tender. Beef was gorgeous. Salad, pickles bread and cheese also really nice. Fed 2 for £17 quid. Nice pub. Ample parking across the road or on the main road, however weekends will be extremely busy so advisable to book ahead. Service: 5
