The Strassburgerhof is a typical neighbourhood haunt. Having hardly changed its furnishings for the last fifty years, you still walk into a darkish, old-style, high-tiled room with dark brown tables and chairs. A remainder of the old smoky athmosphere lingers, even though nobody smokes in here these days, and you will find the regulars at the corner table as ever, crouched over their late morning beers. We dared having dinner there a few days ago as nowhere else was open that night, and it turned out to be rather better than we had feared: the pasta wasn 't overdone (a rare feat in restaurants these days), the tomato sauce was quite all right, and the vegetarian omelette was actually pretty good. Even the small green salad we had for starters turned out to be a generous helping of fresh lettuce served with a basket of fresh dark bread. And the bill was quite reasonable, too.
Reliably open every day of the week,Strassburgerhof has still preserved most of its old decor, but it is now mixed in with photos of local sports clubs and the like. The food shows exactly the same pattern, some of it excellent, some very average. The typically large menu features basically everything you could think of usually a reliable sign of rather average cooking. The salad came as a positive surprise, though, fresh and crisp and served with a lot of good dark bread. The penne, on the other hand, were just as was to be expected, slightly overdone, but they were served with a fairly good tomato sauce with fresh parsley. And the vegetarian omelet was done close to perfection. The meals were quite large, salad and bread alone would have made a perfectly filling lunch for only seven Swiss francs. All in all, a lot of fairly OK food at a very reasonable cost.
I've been going to lunch for many years. Always good, best service. Price/performance is right
