I was disappointed to travel all the way from Ingonish only to find this restaurant closed. It seems like it may be permanent. The photos of the restaurant online looked fabulous, with a lobster pound vibe. Now we're stuck dining at what appears to be a typical tourist trap restaurant.
I was impressed by the unique restaurant I discovered inland on the Nova Scotia coast. The fresh fish aroma was delightful, and the female owner, originally from Wisconsin, was friendly and accommodating. She even offered us some samples before we made a purchase. It was fascinating to see two massive yachts restocking on fresh fish from the store.
We dropped in to this picturesque old little warehouse on the Baddeck waterfront to admire the seafood display and ordered crab salad sandwiches and a dozen oysters. The oysters were incredibly fresh - right out of the box in which they were bought from the fisherman. The place is run by a friendly couple from Minnesota.
We unexpectedly discovered this hidden gem on a Saturday in August and we were happy we did! The owner was incredibly friendly and kind, my children absolutely adored him (especially when he offered them extra free samples of smoked salmon)! We ended up purchasing some smoked salmon for a snack (even though he assured us there was no pressure to buy) and it was a fantastic deal. Later on, we returned and bought some Haddock and shrimp to bring home. He even gave me some cooking tips and allowed me to purchase the shrimp his wife had originally planned for their own dinner that night - so kind! Unfortunately, when we returned the next day, they were sold out of fish and closed. We will definitely come back if we visit the island again! You'll love the excellent service, delicious seafood, and reasonable prices here.
I had the lobster roll for lunch one day. Amazing! We also bought $50 of seafood for an evening meal and as they were packing things up for us, we realized the crappy frying pan at the rental cottage was not going to do the scallops or the tuna justice. As we contemplated whether to go buy one at Home Hardware, Kate offered us hers from behind the counter! This thoughtful gesture saved dinner that night. We returned the pan two days later, when we were next in town.
