The question is, where to start, when there is an almost infinite choice of different cakes and also cake types? What connects cakes in general anyway?! Quite clearly: the dough. Every cake has in some way a cake base - or top or intermediate layer - made of a dough. This can be baked or crumbled. It is therefore safe to say that cake is made of flour, sugar, a binding agent (eggs for example) and fat. Some cakes are supplemented with a little liquid and a raising agent. But by and large, these four ingredients are sufficient.
After the question about the dough, you should also answer the question whether you want to bake a savory or a sweet cake. Since the choice is not as immense with the savory varieties as with the sweet representatives, it is easier to name a few really good and well-known dishes here:
- Tarte
Originally from Alsace, this thin cake is one of the most famous representatives of our hearty squad. The flat cake consists of a thinly rolled out bread dough on which a sour cream together with bacon and onions is spread - into the oven: and that's it! Meanwhile you can find the most different variations of tarte flambée. From salmon and crème fraîche to onion rings and mashed potatoes. What makes the Tarte so special? In addition to all the hearty treats, you can also create a sweet version with apples, pears and cinnamon.
- Onion cake
The cake that lives up to its name. Apart from the dough, it consists mainly of steamed and caramelized onions, which are refined with bacon, sour cream, sweet cream or eggs, depending on taste. It is often found in an angular shape, but sometimes it is also baked round - but this is rather the exception.
- Quiche
This cake from the French kitchen is the last known representative of the hearty cakes. A quiche is baked from a hearty short pastry and is provided with a hearty filling. From spinach with feta cheese to bacon and onions, everything is included. There is even a tarte flambée quiche variation for those who don't feel like making a tarte flambée by themselves.
