Was John Doe at Archtop Cafe a mag?
I was pleasantly surprised to discover that one of my favorite independent coffee shops from Mississauga has recently opened a new location in Bloor West Village. View all feedback.
Located not far from the corner of Jane and Bloor, this cute little eatery is narrow but quite deep. Decorated with vintage vinyl albums (which they also buy,) the decor is simple but effective. The use of yellow walls and old style wall lamps (sconces) using old style bare bulbs is quite effective. Order first at the counter and food is brought to your table (take-out is also popular.) There are places for about 40 people at the rear of the establishment (mostly tables for 4.) Food choices and specials are listed on huge boards above the main counter. Service: fast and effective once served. Food: not quite up to par, needs work. French toasts were undercooked but served with cantelope and orange slices, and blueberries. Panini sandwich was just so so and served without any garnish of any sort. My sister and I got our food within second while my brother and nephew waited 15-20 minutes to get their pancakes (where were the special of the day.) Coffee is served in double thick glass-blown tumblers but the coffee was lukewarm. Prices: not bad but a tad expensive wen you consider the quality. I paid 9.99 for French Toasts (2) and Coffee. I've had nuch better for the same price. Parking: Off street parking only Access: easy access from the street and once inside. With the exception of the elevated platform where we sat at the rear, all the the rest of the place is on one level.
Stopped in here on a Sunday about 10:30 and had the large all day breakfast: two eggs made to order, turkey-bacon, home fries, multi-grain toast, and a large coffee. With tax the meal was $14.99 The food was excellent, with the scrambled eggs cooked just right (not dried out,) and everything else tasty and warm. There is a nice attention to detail here, with onions added to the home fries and elegant plates and glass mugs. The tables seem to be an odd assortment of various types and sizes, but this just added to the independent and eclectic character of the café. My meal wait time was reasonable. The server even provided side portions of marmalade and peanut butter for the toast. The coffee was strong, fresh and tasty. Staff are friendly and seemed committed to providing good service. I think the cost was reasonable given the location on Bloor, the quality of the food and the overall ambiance of the restaurant. A few of the patrons at other tables had their laptops open, so I assume the café has Wi-Fi. As I was leaving, a band was setting up, so you can also enjoy live music if you drop by closer to noon. This is also a nice spot to browse through a vinyl record collection, although these are real collector's items and not the old two-dollars a disc variety you'll find at second hand shops. The café has a relaxed and trendy vibe. This is a good spot to drop by for breakfast, lunch, or a coffee and healthy snack if you're shopping in the Bloor West Village.
