What User dislikes about Ras Kitchen:
We were quite disappointed with our experience. The staff appeared to be very disorganized, which was somewhat frustrating. It seems they need to improve their operations. The menu was quite confusing and difficult to navigate. I would recommend providing a printed menu with explanations for each dish, along with a main course option that includes one or two sides and bread as a complete meal, rather than the current... This place is closed. It indicated that it was open, but after I drove off the exit, parked, and walked over, I found it was not open.
I will not be returning to this restaurant. We ordered a dish labeled as "market price" and asked the waitress to confirm the cost before placing our order. She told us it would be $130, which we accepted. However, when the bill arrived, it was $150; I assumed this was just taxes included. But when we went to the counter to pay, we were told the total was $200! $200 for food that was subpar at best. To make matters worse, the waitress pressured us into paying an extra $5 to play board games. This place feels like a scam. Additionally, she didn’t even ask us about drinks, only served us water, and her attitude was quite rude. I do not recommend this restaurant at all.
I've noticed several other reviews echoing the sentiment that this restaurant is grossly overpriced, and the owner's responses seem dismissive, merely thanking customers for their feedback. I regret not examining the bill more closely to ensure its accuracy, but I was preoccupied with another issue. Oh, and be aware that they'll likely try to have you pay without providing an itemized receipt, so it's wise to ask for one before settling up to confirm everything is correct. On the day my husband and I visited, which happened to be my birthday, our server (who is also the owner's wife) mentioned she would bring us a birthday shot. I was thrilled! She prepared a tasty chocolate shot, but I was taken aback to find it charged on our bill at the end. I assumed it was complimentary since she offered it to me. Little things like that can create a feeling of being scammed, which was disappointing on my special day. I chose not to raise a fuss, but I wanted to share this experience to prevent anyone else from feeling the same. We consciously chose to support this Black-owned business while traveling to Austin, and the surprise charge felt unfair. The shot wasn't listed on the menu, so for all I knew, she could have charged any amount for it. Despite feeling taken advantage of, we still left a 20% tip. If you're going to offer a birthday shot or any similar gesture that might be perceived as free, please make it clear that there will be a charge for it and how much it is. Resorting to sneaky tactics to boost the bill should never be the way to go.
We had a fantastic anniversary dinner. The staff was friendly and professional. We even had the chance to meet Chef Ras and tell him how amazing the food was.
We were quite disappointed with our experience. The staff appeared to be very disorganized, and the food was just average. They definitely need to improve. We found the menu somewhat confusing, and it was difficult to navigate. I would recommend providing a printed menu that includes explanations for each dish. Additionally, offering a main course with one or two sides and bread as a complete meal would be a better approach than the current menu format.
