Was Phillip Marnell at Notes From Underground a mag?
This is a quiet little place on a very active corner. It has a nice, organic laid-back feel to it, and I really enjoyed the substantial tuna salad sandwich. The lady behind the counter was very pleasant and smiled a lot (that's always nice). It was kind of cool to just sit and eat and watch people. I liked it so much I ordered a cappuccino and lingered awhile longer in the SFO twilight. The price was right, the food... View all feedback.
What Judith D dislikes about Notes From Underground:
Very sweet workers! The only caveat was the service was lacking. Places an order over the phone 30 mins in advance but it was made when I got there. Skimped out a bit on the salmon for the lox bagel. Not sure if I will be back for the food but the drinks are good. View all feedback.
Decent cafe, quiet. Good reasonably priced drip coffee. Tea was loose leaf. Food was okay.
Such sweet workers. Good coffee, good prices, good food. Also a nice place to sit down and doesn't seem to get too busy. Would definitely recommend.
This place is truly magical! I wrote a story in Spanish about this coffee shop and its regulars. Brian had been reading all morning. I waited, reviewed the notes my editor made on my novel, and observed him. Brian was steady and unwavering in front of his book, reading and underlining with a sense of ancient and sacred devotion. After two hours, I finally asked him about the title. It was then that a soft light, though minimal, illuminated everything - the past, moments of joy and fear, and the future. Brian explained to me that he was reading a Science Fiction book about a war between a terrestrial army and a celestial one. He thought it was good, although not his favorite. "We may be on the brink of an intergalactic war, but what we're far from having is a united world army..." he said with a hint of melancholy that comes with age. He added, "In any case, I don't think we're alone... I just don't believe it." He then got up, searched through the books displayed in the café, and brought me what he considered one of the best books he had ever read. "It's for you," he said. "Bring it with you when you go back to San Francisco." I promised Brian that I would come back and find him. I promised, at the very least, to remember him. As I sat on the train to the airport, I flipped through the book: every line was underlined. Was it madness? Brian had underlined every single word in that book. It crossed my mind that maybe it was a form of madness and I thought of Borges, who once said, "There are no simple words, because their very existence implies the existence of the universe, which is inherently complex." It dawned on me that highlighting only fragments of books, randomly selected words that we likely don't fully comprehend, may indeed be madness. I imagined that Brian could sense it all: the writer's elation when finding the right word, the satisfaction in constructing an eloquent phrase, the silences, the uncertainties, the exhaustion, and the tedium. Everything that contributes to the creation of a book. Everything that Brian recognized and deemed worthy of being remembered, of being emphasized... Above all, Brian is the source of a certain light... The café is called "Notes from Underground Café." There are days when literature gives birth to itself.
