It 's in a tiny, characteristically Roman piazza, just off the main shopping drag of Campo Marzio and Via del Corso. Vines grow around and over the door (a nice original artisan door). It 's small and pretty with little tables. It serves a selection of very different salads, tasty buffet kinds of dishes like crepe, or soups, or pate 's and has a nice selection of wines, or mineral waters. It 's fun at lunch time because of gorgeous looking men and women who work in Parliament round the corner dropping in for a bite to eat, in a casual sort of way. I went there the first time with my boyfriend to have a 'little ' lunch because it is a very attractive alternative to restaurant lunches or the pizza bars that have sprung up everywhere in the city centre. The price was great. The waiters were friendly, the proprietor was present behind the bar, so service the was pretty good. It 's nice in the evening too, if you like quiet and simple. I went there with a group of girlfriends because we wanted an evening out in the center of Rome, wanted to feel spoiled and eat something different (not the usual first course of pasta, second course of meats etc). We didn 't want a pizza in a pizzeria either. We wanted to catch up and chat and it was a get together more than it was an epicurean eating experience, so we were thrilled. We all ordered different dishes, enjoyed their big menu of salads and wines. We were there for more than four hours. Fun.
This place is simple and the food is very good. Unlike most restaurants in Rome, this place is authentic and just plain tasty. If you are craving an escape from the turist scene and the so-so, overpriced food that goes with it....this place is for you. I have been to Italy 9 times and these were long trips of 2 weeks to 3 months (and I stay with my Italian family when I come).....believe me when I say....this is the real deal....this is the kind of food that made Italian food spread throughout the world....fresh, simple, tasty... The service is brusque...but at the same time you don't get the annoying patronizing treatment found when you walk along the touristy streets of Rome. I highly recommend this place for lunch! And it's close to the great shopping spots.
Wow! Had to order it twice! The tagliatelle with mushrooms and truffles is amazing. The noodle chew, the truffle flavor. Have to come back! The burrata salad was also quite good. The polenta and goulash was very stewy and meaty, but wasn’t as amazing as the tagliatelle. The scamorza was just melty cheese, but solid.
Vini e Buffet is a very simple wine bar that hides a family restaurant with great potential. The service is a bit aloof but fast, and the place doesn't have many seats, so it fills up quickly. The menu isn't as carefully crafted as the presentation, yet what you get is a true explosion of flavor, especially their tonnarello cacio e pepe. If you find yourself in this place, don't be fooled by its aesthetics; come in, sit down, and enjoy some excellent home-cooked food. Congratulations!
