Tucked away in the Northside, this restaurant has garnered mixed reviews, showcasing both culinary triumphs and disappointments. I called and asked if the food at the Northside location is prepared early, and was told that it is. I was warned that you can get sick from food that has been sitting out for hours before being served, but I don't believe that is true. Regardless, I will never be going back to Carmi Express on Federal Street - it will be Carson Street only for me. Thank you.
The smoked wings, ribs, cabbage, potato salad, pasta salad and cornbread were delicious! My husband and I shared the meal, and we still have leftovers for lunch tomorrow! The banana pudding could use a few more vanilla wafers, but it was still good.
After hearing rave reviews from some of my Northside neighbors, I was excited to try the food at this restaurant. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with my experience. The fried chicken tasted like it was cooked in old oil and was overcooked. The Mac n cheese was bland and unappealing. The cooked cabbage was overwhelmingly garlicky, making it inedible for me. I hope that this was just a one-time bad experience and that I will give them another chance in the future.
Best take out soul food in the burgh. Carleen and Mike are the best and between them and their staff they make you feel welcomed like family at all their locations. Everything is amazing. The chicken and waffles are killer. The specials keep itfresh and the ingredients are always fresh and delicious. Made and served with love. A Northside and Pittsburgh institution.
2 stars because the food isn?t terrible. BUT, there must be different cooks at this location not trained the same way as the others at the main location on Carson street. The Mac n cheese here is very inconsistent. If time only allows you to stop at theexpress location then go for it. I definitely wouldn?t recommend it. Also, apparently this location needs to use smallercontainers for the sides?.(photo attached)
