What Sweetcure dislikes about O'Conway's:
What a dump. Don't be fooled by the Irish Pub name. It's a cold, stark , filthy, tatty corner at the end of the station offering an extremely limited and expensive selection of beers and some disgusting food, served by miserable staff. No effort has been made to create a cozy Irish pub atmosphere whatsoever. Dirty and tatty , loads of lightbulbs not working that haven't been replaced and 50eurocents charged for using... Had to wait for a few hours for gare du nord waiting for my train despite many restaurants outside the railway station I didn't want to leave it with my bags. this small restaurant in the top floor, as one of the few restaurants that are among the many stands in the stations. the hamburger menu I ordered was solid. € 12.50 for a good and tasteful hamburger. simple salad, a few fryed and a drink was good enough for me. the service was also fast.
By all accounts, this is an average venue. The food is average, the beer is average and the wine is lovely, the service is unremarkable but certainly not bad. What really makes this venue is the location. It is literally right by the gates for...the Eurostar in Paris, Gare Du Nord. We stopped here whilst we waited for our train and had an okay time. It's certainly not a patch on the St Pancras end of the reverse journey which kind of makes it a bit disappointing all in all. But it's okay. The waitress is nice, the place is clean, the service quick, the beer and wine cold. The toilets are pay-entry which is terrible, but that's the only real complaint. Being such a captive audience and then charging for drinks and bathroom use seems too much.
Fast too much. Served intercote has a point but served cold.Very friendly. There's only the beer that's worth the detour.
We had time to spare before our Eurostar back to England after arriving at Gare du Nord on Saturday. We would not normally go to a chain pub (Irish or otherwise), especially in France, but one of our party had mobility problems so we opted for something near the Eurostar departure hall. We were not expecting anything grand but just wanted a competent brasserie-style meal – we were in a Parisian railway terminus, after all – but this place is a disaster area. First signs were not good – the table and floor area were dirty (there were even pigeons walking around). But the food – mon dieu! I was told that the plat du jour would be grilled ham – what turned up was the worst kind of rubberised chicken in a cloying sweet sauce, served with disgusting frites. Inedible, as was the fish and chips that my companions inadvisedly ordered (A plea in mitigation: we were hungry and had been travelling from the South on a delayed TGV for six hours to G d Lyon, then across Paris to G du Nord. So it was hassle we didn't need) We couldn't eat any of it. The waitress was clearly embarrassed at the offerings and she interceded with the management on our behalf. They did at least waive the price of the fish and chips but really – why offer such bad food? Makes Little Chef look like the Ritz. Advice to travellers: avoid this place. After 30 years of travelling in France it was by far the worst culinary experience. Don't go there!
