Located in the Robert Treat Hotel across from NJPAC, this polished restaurant — now renamed — pairs attentive, friendly service and well-crafted cocktails with an attractive pre-theater ambiance. While several dishes (steak, crab cake, cheesecake) impress, menu inconsistency is a recurring problem: some entrees and desserts have been described as underwhelming or inedible. Service is generally strong but can be slow; paid parking and a disconnected old phone number have caused confusion. Visit for drinks and select dishes.
1. The staff is outstanding—attentive and friendly. 2. The drinks are also commendable. I have no complaints; they are well-made and quite enjoyable. 3. Now, onto the food, which brings me to my first issue: inconsistency. I rarely feel inclined to write negative reviews, and I'm trying my best not to do so here. I ordered a medium rare steak, and it was absolutely perfect—100%. However, my dining companion had the Brazilian steak with ham and egg, along with rice and chips, and it was unfortunately inedible. The sauce tasted unpleasantly reminiscent of egg foo young, but not in a good way. My suggestion would be to remove this dish from the menu if it doesn’t meet the quality of your other offerings. 4. Dessert was similarly inconsistent. We tried the cheesecake, which was amazing, but the rice pudding was a complete letdown. I suggest pulling it from the menu if it doesn't match the quality of your other desserts. 5. Lastly, there’s been a name change! This restaurant is no longer operating under the name Maize, and the original phone number is disconnected, leading to quite a bit of confusion. It would have been better to keep the original phone number. Overall, while there are some strong points, there are certainly areas that need improvement.
Terrible food. The pancakes had a bland taste, reminiscent of Play-Doh, and the strawberries were sour. Given the price, one would expect better quality. I recommend steering clear of this place!
