On top of its reliably satisfying Italian food this restaurant offers atmospheric premises on the ground level of the 1930-31 stone and brick building erected for The Equity Trustees Co. There are pillars, arches and other vintage architectural details to admire. Before this building was built, the site was occupied by Melbourne's first Hebrew congregation. The service was warm and welcoming. The cuisine offered was classic southern Italian fare.
Donato really does cook a beautiful lasagne, we were in a hurry and as usual Donato insisted on making us feel like we were stepping into a small Sicilian restaurant, even though we were in the CBD opposite our office.Donato is a better showman than waiter, let's not lie about this, but he does everything with such a cheeky attitude of aplomb that you can't help but smile and feel relaxed and at home.I would recommend a trip to Donatos to anyone, his food is second to none in the CBD and although it's not going to win any healthy or cheap eats awards, the home cooked feel more than makes up for that. The Mario brothers would be proud.
My son was busting to have some Italian so hopped off the tram and went in. Greeted with a smile and a laugh and made to feel right a home. Our order was quickly taken and food didn't take long either. Bolognaise pasta went down a treat and was well priced especially considering it is in the CBD. Will go back again before trip is over
