Located in a serene area of Ermita, Obelisk Cafe Restaurant offers a cozy and straightforward dining experience. It is found within the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons. We were the only customers having a late lunch around 2:30 PM on a Saturday, but the service took a while. The lomi was a great value for the price and was enough to feed four people when ordered with other dishes. The pepperoni pizza was tasty. The cheesy fries topped with bacon bits were decent, although we found the extra cheese powder a bit overwhelming. The meat and vegetables in the kare-kare were good, but the sauce and bagoong could use some improvement. Unfortunately, the La Paz Batchoy we ordered was overly salty; I could only manage a small portion. On a positive note, the Mason compound provided a nice escape from the heat, noise, and pollution of Manila, and there was plenty of parking available. I adore the charming old-world atmosphere of the area, with its towering trees surrounding the buildings and parking lot. We ordered the spicy squid and beef salpicao, and both dishes brought a delightful surprise with the first bite! Absolutely delicious! However, the cappuccino was a letdown; the milk foam was too runny and watery. I’m not sure if it’s an issue with the frothing technique or the machine itself.
