Welcome to Fish-WIKS, where we dive deep into the intersection of knowledge systems—both western and Indigenous—to elevate the dialogue surrounding Canadian fisheries policy. Our research, supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), seeks to uncover the rich tapestry of Indigenous knowledge across diverse regions of Canada, including the Pacific, Arctic, Inland, and Atlantic coasts. Through our focused studies in four unique coastal communities—Tla-o-qui-aht in British Columbia, Naujaat in Nunavut, Nipissing in Ontario, and Eskasoni in Nova Scotia—we aim to identify both the common threads and distinctive elements of Indigenous knowledge systems. By fostering collaboration between Indigenous and western approaches, we aspire to pave the way for more sustainable practices in Canadian fisheries.
