The restaurant is a small, cozy gem with a funky décor and friendly servers. Despite some mixed reviews of the food quality, the overall experience seems to be positive, with delicious dishes like beef tartare, smoked duck wontons, and kale Caesar salad. The staff is knowledgeable and welcoming, providing great wine recommendations. The restaurant also offers live music in the art gallery downstairs on Wednesday nights. The outdoor deck with a fireplace provides a cozy spot for enjoying drinks. Overall, a unique and charming place to dine and enjoy a relaxed evening out. Highly recommended for those looking for a different dining experience.
Wow - how come I hadn't heard of this place? It's a super cool very small funky little restaurant on 11th avenue which used to be a bar a long time ago. I know because I used to party there in the 80's! Now there is the little (maybe 8 table) restaurant upstairs on the main level and then the gallery below. It is owned by the Gallery Artist - Gerry Thomas. The gallery downstairs can be rented for private functions - would make a terrific place for a cocktail party, etc. We attended before the symphony one evening at 6 pm and it was empty - which is crazy. We moved from a table to the bar because we found the seating at the tables were a bit low - I think they want a casual cozy atmosphere at the tables. It has a small menu with specialty items and the two chefs in the back really know their jobs. I had the beef tartar to start - the portion was a decent size and it was delicious. My husband had the smoked duck wontons - and they were amazing. As you can see by the photo the duck was cooked perfectly. As I had to power up on iron/protein, I had the sirloin steak as an entree and was not disappointed. The steak was cooked perfectly - charred outside and med-rate inside just like I love it. My Husband had the duck entree - again very delicious - I never cook duck so he enjoys it every chance he gets. And, how can you tell we are carnivores?! They did have a vegetarian option as an appetizer and entree as well. Our server was very informative and pleasant. They have a nice deck out front with a huge fireplace - we'll definitely go back there again.
We have been heading here for the Wednesday night live music in the art gallery downstairs. The food is great, especially the kale cesear salad (think Una's but better)! . Great spot, good food, wine and live music.
Love this place. Bartenders will make you anything you can dream of and the Chef makes such amazing food. Can't wait to go back. See you soon ChefBar
There was a lot to like about this restaurant, if it was just about the food and drink and ambiance I would have rated higher. There were two servers helping us, which perhaps sounds like a good thing, but in fact it created a lot of confusion for both. One was clearly more experienced than the other and was trying her best but she seemed to be needing to take care of all the tables and picking up all the slack where the other, more junior server was lacking. They were also both doing the job of bartender as well. We had to ask multiple times for things. After sitting there for close to an hour we had to track someone down to put in our dinner order as we were all very hungry by this point. One of the tables was very uneven and wobbly which made eating dinner challenging. There was a dietary restriction that the one server kept having issues with, she clearly was not familiar with the menu, ingredients, and didn't bother checking with the kitchen until the food came out wrong. We were there for a special occasion so I will admit I was disappointed overall, we were out to celebrate and treat our friend for her birthday and I was hoping for an much more polished experience. I would give it another try in a few months for a casual lunch or something to see if the service has improved.
I've been here on three occasions and enjoyed each time. Not equally, but mostly because the specials change. The scallop dish was my favourite and was only offered the once. An added advantage is the gallery downstairs. Very nice to browse after dinner or lunch, if open, and Wednesday Wine and Art evenings are worth attending. Very nice patio with a fireplace as well.
