We took the kids here due to the reviews on TripAdvisor and I was horrified to learn they still use the styrofoam takeaway containers from the 80's! how can a business so close to the beautiful Great Barrier Reef be using this type of material - we all know it NEVER breaks down and ends up in our oceans. We went in a hot afternoon in end May. We had been looking for a place to eat around that area but were tired and just casually selected this one which looked like a fast food shop. We did not expect much other than filling our stomach. But to our big surprise, the food tasted good. We ordered coconut chowder, BBQ beef burger, sweet potato. None of these disappointed us. The ladies serving us were nice and helpful.
If you love a smoothie with your morning nutritional supplements the sit on the Shields Street al Fresco seating and sip your Green Warrior smoothie. While in Cairns we tried several from their extensive menu (some best in the am and others work mid afternoon) and we loved them all. There are heaps of reviews of Frydays seafood and on the night you will read 'terrible' and 'best ever'. The Coconut Crumbed Prawns and grilled Hoki and avocado wrap were yummy.
As my first meal in Australia, I was eager to try some fish and chips. The prices were quite reasonable, coming to $13.90 for the meal and a bottle of water. However, the hot weather may have influenced my enjoyment of the food. Unfortunately, the fish didn't impress me, and the batter was overly greasy. The fries were lacking in flavor, to the point where I didn't even want to finish them. On a positive note, the aioli was quite tasty and added some flavor to the dish. Overall, I don't think I would choose to return to this restaurant.
Overall, I highly recommend this restaurant if you want to avoid the usual tourist traps in Cairns. Just choose the breaded or grilled fish instead of the battered option.
