If you want to try something different from the local pubs (there are 4 in Burra and North Burra) and the local takeaway bakery or pizza shop, then this is it. They do a great coffee so if you are looking for a great coffee the cafe opens at 8am for coffee. It is also open for lunch and dinners. Had a group of walkers doing the Heysen Trail and had a booking for 7pm on a Saturday. Unfortunately due to the length of the walk and some injuries to 2 group members we were very late back and had to cancel the booking. Getting back to Burra after 8.30pm we thought we had no hope of getting a meal anywhere. Pub had closed at 8pm for dinners. 3 of us " cheekily" turned up to White Cedars and asked for a meal. They were absolutely obliging and willing to serve. We tried to get the rest of the group but they were exhausted from the walk. A pity because it was tasty, fresh beautiful meal. So homely! A delightful couple giving personal service. I went to the bathroom which was located in the living area of the house and I felt like a guest at someone's home. We all had the Curry chicken and nice Indonesian beer. A real gem of a restaurant with service not seen these days. Highly recommended. Hope to bring more back again to make up for the lost numbers from the night.
The overall appearance of restaurant frontage and interior fittings, furniture and trinkets was very attractive and only having 20 or so seats inside was very cosy on a winters night. Service was good but the waiter kept disappearing for periods, I assume to help in kitchen as the 3 tables being used all seemed to have their food arrive one after the other in a space of 3-4 minutes.The menu is very limited to 7 or 8 dishes as mains that all seemed to swim in coconut based soup. The Bali chicken I had, as did 2 others all had a sweetcorn and pea frozen packet mix as the vegetable and the other diner had a chicken curry, the difference was carrot straws and cauli florets had been added. The dishes were quick simplistic curries, no where near tasting authentic Indonesian dishes I have experienced elsewhere and in Bali. We were informed there were no spring rolls or Prawns available on the night. Not really good enough for a small establishment on their first night of the week ( Wed.) opening.
Thankyou for your wonderful hospitality during our stay in Burra. Wonderful morning coffee, warming soup for lunch and an amazing evening meal. An amazing find in friendly Burra South Australia, highly recommend !
