LaLou is a charming restaurant in Crown Heights with a focus on natural wines and small plates. The food, particularly the olives and cured mackerel, stood out. However, some reviewers found the food portions too small or lacking in quality compared to the wine selection. Despite some mixed reviews on the menu, the staff at LaLou was consistently praised for their knowledge and service. The ambiance, wine list, and excellent service make LaLou a must-visit for wine lovers in Brooklyn. The cozy setting and friendly staff create a welcoming atmosphere for a unique dining experience.
We had such a great meal at LaLou. The wine list is vast, and all of the appetizers and entrees were really excellent. Standouts were the endive salad and the pastry, followed by the steak. Each was perfectly prepared and quite memorable. The deserts were less memorable in comparison good, but not great. But we wouldn’t hesitate to return, this was one of our favorite meals of the summer.
The food here is good, I can't really complain about the food itself but I have to say it's overpriced (portions are small) and a bit pretentious too.The menu is a list of French words that make dishes sound like you're at a Michelin star restaurant and instead it's the same old NYC menu: chicken/fish/ steak as a main course, and other smaller things as starters.Nothing new here and unfortunately NYC dining is becoming more and more like this. Trying too hard to make it an experience or an instagram pic rather than a genuine good meal.
Go for the oysters and a glass of wine especially if you can get there for happy hour. I've been for dinner multiple times recently and the portions are small for entrees; the menu has limited options (especially if you don't eat pork); and they won't do things like serve a salad before you order the entree (so you can't really do small plates and eat before deciding with friends on what to order for entrees). The bread is also very random: it's like $8 dollars and sometimes they give you two pieces, sometimes three, and sometimes they bring three slices of toasted sandwich bread (rather than a substantial loaf). But the OYSTERS ARE AMAZING. Servers are also very nice and friendly.
Stopped here after a day at the museum. I just wanted some good wine and had my sights on this place for a while. The bartender suggested a great full bodies and I paired it with some olives, cheese, grapes, honey and almonds. I didn’t come for a meal, just to nosh. I will definitely get the oyster, next time around. Service: Dine in Meal type: Lunch Price per person: $30–50 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Recommended dishes: Cheese Plate and Olives
