The Flapper Speakeasy sits tucked beside the Cambrian Canal, a popular live-music pub with indoor/outdoor seating, a balcony and excellent acoustics. Friendly, fast staff serve a wide selection of beers, ciders and substantial subs (6ixsubs) at affordable prices; pool tables, quiz nights and open‑mic/band nights add variety. It’s a lively pre‑ and post‑gig hangout near the NIA and Brindley Place. Note: shows use assigned seating with limited sightlines and busy-night entry/bar logistics can be confusing.

My issue arose with the seating for the show. Typically, burlesque shows have general admission where you choose your seats upon arrival or allow you to select specific seats when booking. However, The Flapper Speakeasy has a system where you are assigned a specific seat, which I found quite disappointing. Despite arriving early and being the third person in the venue, I ended up in the worst seats in the house. Had I known, I would have certainly chosen differently. From my assigned seat, I was too far back with three rows of tables between me and the stage, making it impossible to see anything but the backs of people's heads. This blocked my view of the entire stage. I had to stand to catch glimpses of the performance, but even then, I struggled to see acts that included floor work or aerial drops. I had seen many of these acts at other venues and found them enjoyable, but they didn’t translate well at The Flapper unless you were seated in the front row. Out of six burlesque shows/venues I’ve visited in the past month, this is the only one I wouldn’t return to unless the seating system changes to allow me to secure a front row seat.
This is a lovely pub, perfect for enjoying a beer on warm summer days. Although it feels a bit dated, the spacious terrace makes up for it.
The restaurant boasts an excellent variety of beers and ciders. The food from 6ixsubs is tasty and well-loved by everyone in my group. Its unique location by the canal feels somewhat tucked away, just around the corner from the bustling Brindley Place. The outdoor seating is perfect for enjoying the sunshine. If you choose to sit inside, you'll likely hear a great playlist of rock, alternative rock, and metal music, which aligns nicely with the pub's musical roots. Additionally, the pool tables are a fun perk, costing only £1 per game at the time of this review.

Visited Birmingham with a friend on Saturday with the intention of viewing the “Back To The Beginning” stream that was being held at this venue. Upon our arrival to the flapper it did seem fairly busy from the outside, but no busier than a standard Saturday at this venue. There was no clear queueing system visible to us from the outside, only a couple of small groups of people smoking and drinking. Given what we could see we tried to enter, and I was greeted by presumably one of the doormen who more or less shouted “No” in my face, and threw his hand up to me in quite an aggressive manner, very nearly touching my chest. Apparently there was a one in, one out kind of system due to how busy it was but unfortunately this was not clear to us at all. I would also like to add that the security member in question, though he had an armband on, did not seem to have any other security attire on so it was not readily apparent that he was a member of staff, especially with his positioning. I have visited this bar on a number of occasions before and have never seen this particular member of staff. The security and staff I have come into contact with before are usually very friendly and welcoming. As a young female this event did shake me up a little bit, and although I do really enjoy visiting this venue for its gigs and social events with friends, I may re consider before visiting again unfortunately.
