We visited this small restaurant several times during our week in Bilbao. Everytime succesfull. We tryed breakfast, dayli menu and tapa. We loved everything. Very friendly and good service from the owner and staff We will be back next time.
Great quality, and at a very reasonable price. Surprisingly this restaurant is very well known only for the seafood. I couldn 't be happier with the meal we had, without any seafood. And at a very nice price!!! The restaurant is very quiet, because it 's not the very last fashion restaurant on the city. We could say it 's a classic , managed by the same couple for more than 30 years. We started with original mushrooms, made in the owen. As main course, my fish was excellent, but the guys having steak were even happier than me. The most awesome desert was called mil hojas . It should be mandatory to try it once in your life. We had a very good white wine, following their advise, and it was very tasty, soft and sweet. Delicious. No doubt I 'll be back sooner than later.
It was a very wet evening in Bilbao and we ducked I. Here for a few drinks to dry off. Very friendly host , who despite only a little English help me with some basque pronunciation. Old fashioned traditional decor , good wine choices . Lots of people came and went, tapas seemed good value. Don't be put off if no one in you can never judge , make your own mind up.
My wife and I have eaten and dined in Maider many times in the last few years. It 's very conveniently located in the Abando area in the New Town and close to the Abando Hotel itself. One of the reasons we come here so often is that it is nearly always open. It opens first thing in the morning for Desayuno (Breakfast). At lunchtime they serve a very good value 'menu del dia ' but you can eat a la carte. They close around midnight. The restaurant is divided into two areas. The front of house area is what you see when you enter and that is the bar itself and a trattoria style dinning area. There is a another room in the back which seems to be reserved for those eating the expensive seafood. We 've never dined in the 'posh ' part so I can 't vouch for its style or comfort but I 'm perfectly happy in the front. Okay, onto the food. Although Maider is primarily a 'Fish and Seafood ' restaurant they cook very good meat dishes as well. They use great quality raw ingredients and let them do the talking. That 's usually a good thing but the seafood here is expensive. At these prices I would expect a little more polish and creativity. That is a criticism I could level at many restaurants though. I feel I should add that the dishes have a strong Basque element. Txangurro (Spider Crab) is a popular dish here for example. My favourite time to eat here is lunchtime where they offer a great menu del dia. You have a three course meal and a bottle of wine thrown in for good measure for about £10 which is outstanding value. You can also come in any time of the day and have a drink and some tapas at the bar. They offer a good range of drinks and it 's a friendly place too. I cant give it full marks because some of the dishes are too expensive for what you get. It 's good stuff though and I would recommend coming here.
