We stumbled upon this little café completely by chance when we were looking for a parking space (we planned to visit the museums around the corner in Schloßstraße). It already looks comfortable and lovely from the outside so we stepped in. Inside it is even lovelier! The café has only 4 tables and some seats at the window. Its furniture and ambiente is like stepping into another aera. The host is a lovely guy, the prices are just unbeatable, Spätfrühstück - late breakfast - is EUR 3,90. It includes scrambled egg, bacon (if you are vegetarian, he offers an alternative), cheese, olives, Turkish sausage, goat cheese and even a raspberry (in the middle of winter!!). Delicious bread with basil leaves is served as a side. A cup of cappuccino is EUR 2,20, a coke is EUR 1,50 - I haven't seen these prices in ages!We enjoyed our breakfast and coffee, read some newspapers and magazines and had a great time. The cakes and curries looked delicious but unfortunately we were not hungry anymore.Make sure to step in when you are visiting nearby Schloss Charlottenburg or one of the museums around the corner at Schlossstraße!
We found this little cafe close to where we were staying in Charlottenberg and if you are visiting Berlin for the famous Christmas Markets this month it is situated just a short walk across the road from the beautiful Schloss Charlottenberg (a must see stop when ever visiting Berlin - beautiful gardens with a lake). The cafe is owned and run by Rauf, a very straight forward guy who, as he put it, loves to cook because it makes him happy! We visited twice, because once was simply not enough! What attracted us to his little cafe was the wonderful looking ice cream displayed in the window. With the ice cream already in mind for desert we ventured inside hoping that someone would speak English as we did not speak German and we were not disappointed. Rauf greeted us and asked us what we wanted, we said we were hungry he said no problem, take a seat. He chatted and told us he had chicken curry today, we said great, he said OK take a seat and leave it to me. He then came back with a freshly made salad and asked us what we wanted to drink, do you have mint tea? we asked, yes came the reply. He came back with 2 glass cups of fresh mint tea with a slice of orange..... simple but wonderfully refreshing. We sat and chatted, Rauf came back and introduced us to a lady sat next to us who spoke English and had lived in this part of Berlin for the past 35 years. As we chatted the chicken curry arrived, presented in a perfect size portion with rice, hand cut chicken breast pieces in a mild curry sauce with a decorative garnish - perfect. When I say perfect size portion I mean that you still had some room left for Ice Cream!!The curry was great, not too hot and not to mild, just right for both of us. Rauf came over from time to time to see how we were getting one and then said OK so time for dessert. Ice cream for me and Apple struddel for Iris. Which flavours would you like? After some deliberation I chose mango, raspberry and vanilla, 1 ball of each. After a short while Rauf appeared placing a tall sundea glass in front of me with my choice of ice cream placed inside and decorated with a large slice of mango and some whipped cream and then he placed a nice slice of struddel in front of Iris and asked if we would like coffee to follow. It was a fantastic dining experience that came along quite by chance. There was no menu so take a deep breath and put your trust in a very capable chef and you will be repaid with a memorable experience at a reasonable price. As I mentioned earlier, we went back the next day for lunch and were introduced to another 'local' who was there with his kids having Ice Cream. And our second visit was as memorable as the first. Rauf you are a Star in our book and long may your wonderful little eis cafe prosper!!Little independant owner run cafe's like this need supporting or they will disappear for good and we will be left with bland corporate eating venues with bland same as everybody else food and big corporate brand coffee and ice cream on the menu. The words sterile and boring come to mind. Don't let it happen, support the independent owner and keep proper cooking alive!Next time you are in Berlin make sure you drop in and say Hello to Rauf and see what's cooking. Tell him Kevin and Iris sent you. You will not be disappointed!! Hi Rauf - see you next time we are in Berlin. We are looking forward to it already.Merry Christmas / Frohe Weihnachten!Nehringstr. 114059 BerlinArea: CharlottenburgTel: 030 32678057
