We were incredibly excited to try Bath’s The Elder Restaurant during our holiday in the UK. Their story is inspiring, the ethos is exactly where we hope all restaurants go, and the reviews are consistently positive. While the service was good and the ambiance was interesting to us, the food missed the mark. We love to eat great food, especially when traveling—this meal was good, not great. Our favorite components of the tasting menu included the artichoke velouté, salted butter, and venison broth not the deer or bass, which could have been the showstoppers. When we go back, we’ll try ordering items a la cart. Outside of the food, dimmer lighting and a less scripted staff would have elevated the experience. TL;DR The overall experience and cost of the tasting menu did not add up to the total on our bill.

Went for the taster menu. Both traditional and vegetarian. The dishes were beautiful and interestingly plated and were each unique and lovely tasting. One thing that should be noted, however, was the huge amount of food provided and to top it off the very large amounts of alchohol. However, the atmosphere was wonderful, the staff kind and very keen to demonstrate each quality of the dishes whilst making every customer we saw feel very welcome. Price per person: £100+ Food: 4 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Vegetarian offerings: Menu is all vegetarian, Vegetarian menu or section, Clearly labelled vegetarian dishes Vegetarian options: Although there was no choice provided with a vegetarian menu, the food was still delicious and just as exciting as the meat menu.
The food was generally very good and the restaurant itself had a pleasant atmosphere. There were a couple of challenging and adventurous. We felt a couple of the courses were quite boring the cheese course was a simple piece of cheese with blackberry chutney and there was a course consisting of (a large amount of) bread, butter and a game tea. Bread in general features heavily in the menu (3 of my courses a final bite), and whilst his would usually not be too my taste, all the baked goods were exceptional, especially the brioche/potato flour type bun. The main course of venison was under seasoned to my taste. The final desert was outstanding, both in taste and presentation, and was the highlight of the evening. The service was not of the standard you would expect and felt a little clumsy, perhaps the waitress was nervous/new? My only half finished cocktail was taken away from me during the first course! We felt that the price was fair for the experience we had and would recommend a visit.
