When I want to overlook the Saga to Chikugo Plain from Higashigashima, I come to this observation deck. The store closes at 6 p.m., so you can't park on the south side of the parking lot, but it seems you can still enjoy the view. View all feedback.
One of the mountain passes that connects Fukuoka to Saga, located after passing through a toll tunnel at the southern end of Nanwan Dam from the Fukuoka side, is a michi-no-eki (roadside station). It offers free water service, so you can fill up your water bottles before heading out for camping (just be mindful of not taking too much). Despite being in the mountains, it has a cafe with surprising dishes like anago steamed in a bamboo basket, along with a bakery and an observation deck. Depending on when you visit, there may be times when the view is obscured by bad weather, so it's best to manage your expectations. This route offers a stunning view immediately after exiting the tunnel, giving a feeling of diving toward the Saga Plain.
The view was not great because it was cloudy...but on a clear day, you can see Mt. Fugen. There was a water station where locals were fetching water. I wasn't sure if the water was safe to drink, so I didn't try it. From this roadside station, there are two routes: a toll road and a mountain pass road. Since it was my first time, I chose to take the toll road and went through a tunnel. The toll for a regular car is 320 yen.
