The restaurant is situated in the stunning mountainous region of Kumano, Japan, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The owner and their family used to reside in the city, but made the decision to relocate with their five children to Kumano, creating a warm and inviting family atmosphere at the restaurant.
Finding vegan food in the Japanese countryside can be challenging, but we stumbled upon this gem for my birthday lunch. Due to Covid, they have adjusted their hours so it's best to make a reservation ahead of time. This place had a lot to offer and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Tucked away in the mountains, the setting was calm and picturesque. The food was mostly sourced locally and freshly prepared. Our set lunch featured a variety of small dishes like rice, spring rolls, soup, pasta salad, croquettes, and fried vegetables. To end our meal, we had a warm beverage – I opted for the soymilk chai. The owner was friendly and engaging, adding to the charm of the quaint cafe and creating a delightful atmosphere. I would definitely return to this wonderful cafe in the future!
The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere with a fireplace in the corner, handmade wooden furniture, and a friendly owner. The farmyard outside added to the charm, making it feel like a different world. The vegetarian food was surprisingly good considering the remote location. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious and full of healthy vegetables. After hiking the Kumano Kodo, staying at the guest house was a great choice as the healthy food was a welcome treat after a long day. The staff even provided transportation to and from Hongu by car, making it a convenient stay. Overall, I highly recommend staying at the guest house for any vegetarian hikers on the Kumano Kodo trail.
Located in the stunning mountain side of UNESCO World heritage Kumano, Japan, this family-run B&B is a true gem. The owner and his family made the brave decision to leave city life behind and move to Kumano with their five children. The result is a cozy and welcoming B&B with goats and a dog on the property. The owner personally crafted the rooms and cafe with a fireplace, showcasing his talent for design. His wife, a skilled macrobiotic chef, prepared a delicious and memorable breakfast, along with organic French-pressed coffee. For an incredible deal of ¥4000 a night or ¥7000 with a vegan dinner, guests can enjoy a truly special experience. The owners even offer a pick up service from Hongu bus terminal. This B&B is the perfect weekend getaway from Osaka and comes highly recommended.

Despite shortened hours due to COVID, I recommend making a reservation in advance. The location, nestled in the mountains, is peaceful and beautiful. The food is all locally sourced and freshly made, with a lunch package featuring rice, sushi rolls, soup, pasta salad, croquettes, and roasted vegetables. I tried the soy milk shake for a warm drink, which was delicious. The owner was friendly and attentive, and the cafe itself has a charming and relaxing atmosphere. I can't wait to visit again!
